To not want to touch my money when I get paid?

BluntLilacGuide · 05/04/2025 21:27

I prefer to leave it in my account or even put it straight into savings without spending it right away. I find that if I start spending it too soon, I just feel like I’m wasting it. Does anyone else feel this way or am I overthinking it?

Um. Do you not have bills to pay?

Kittyfur · 05/04/2025 21:28

Don’t you need it to pay bills????

Sofiewoo · 05/04/2025 21:29

Weird outlook, most people has bills to pay.

IReallyLoveItHere · 05/04/2025 21:30

What money do you use to spend if your wage goes straight to savings?

Probably better your mindset than the person who blows it all on pay day so long as you're not living a miserable life or leeching off someone else.

BrickHedgehog · 05/04/2025 21:31

Aside from paying necessary bills isn’t that what most people do . I’m not sure I know anyone who goes ‘ way hey it’s payday let’s go out and spend all the money ‘ .

Lots of people do exactly that!

Anywherebuthere · 05/04/2025 21:32

I know what you mean but bills and expenses need paying so it never stays left alone for long.

Hankunamatata · 05/04/2025 21:32

Well I leave my bill money on the account and transfer my spending money and food moneu into others accounts so I don't over spend or accidently spend bill money

EmeraldShamrock000 · 05/04/2025 21:33

How do you pay bills?
No, I am not sensible with money. If I had plenty I would probably be better at saving.

And lots of those that can would pay straight into a savings account anyway, on pay day. So it's not that weird to save. But it is weird to have no bills to pay.

Unless op lives with a partner and she has the mindset - 'his money is family money, my money is my money' as is beloved on mn! 😆

I definitely cover all my responsibilities - it’s not that I don’t spend at all, just that I like a bit of breathing space before I do. It helps me prioritise and avoid impulse spending.

It’s more about mindset than deprivation - I like knowing where my money’s going before it goes, even if that means sitting on it for a bit first.

So you mean your purchases are planned, not rushed, perhaps?

Imperfectpolly · 05/04/2025 21:40

I think I understand where you're coming from. I used to impulse buy when my monthly pay came in, spending any excess cash immediately. Now I set myself a wait rule. More often than not, I end up never buying the item.

HundredPercentUnsure · 05/04/2025 21:39

Exactly that - I like to pause and plan before spending. It’s not about being stingy, it just gives me peace of mind to know my purchases are intentional. Glad someone gets it!

So, do you just mean you want there to be a few days between the income hitting your account, and your rent/mortgage, utilities, council tax, insurance etc all coming out?

Waterweight · 05/04/2025 21:49

What a novel idea 🤔

Bit really ? What's the point ?

No one said it’s weird to save, OP’s post suggests she moves her whole pay check into savings.

Not quite - I obviously let the essentials come out when they’re due. It’s more that I like to pause before spending on non-essentials.

So rather than buying something straight after payday just because I can, I prefer to let the money sit for a bit, plan ahead, and make sure I really want or need what I’m buying. It’s a mindset thing more than a timing one.

Wingingitbestican · 05/04/2025 21:56

I get paid on the 25th and most of my bills come out on the 1st. I try to spend very little between that time.

BluntLilacGuide · 05/04/2025 21:56

Waterweight · 05/04/2025 21:49

The point is peace of mind really. I find that if I let the money sit for a bit, I’m less likely to spend it impulsively or on things I don’t truly need.

It helps me make more conscious choices and over time, that’s saved me quite a bit. Might not work for everyone but it works for me.

OP posts:
PodgePie · 05/04/2025 21:59

So you’re not talkIng about saving your entire pay check? Isn’t it relatively normal to ensure your monthly wage lasts for the month?

PodgePie · 05/04/2025 21:59

So you’re not talkIng about saving your entire pay check? Isn’t it relatively normal to ensure your monthly wage lasts for the month?

Right - I’m not saying I save 100% of my pay or never spend. It’s more about resisting the urge to spend immediately just because it’s payday.

I know plenty of people who feel the pull to treat themselves as soon as the money lands and I’ve just found I do better (and feel better) when I let it sit for a bit and plan ahead.

So yes, it might be normal to budget but being deliberate about how and when I spend is what I was really talking about.

OP posts:
TranceNation · 05/04/2025 22:07

To the contrary in an ideal world I'd like to line up all my direct debits for the month to come out the day after payday.

YellowGuido · 05/04/2025 22:14

I wish had the option not to touch mine! Every pay day, I wake up singing… “before it’s earned, our money’s all been spent”!
