I see so many incredible mums here who seem to have everything together, especially when it comes to managing finances. Honestly, I don’t feel like I’m one of those! I've had a comfortable life so far, but my partner and I have just split, and I’m now facing the reality of trying to make ends meet whilst also being heartbroken. The best I can afford for myself and my son in London is a studio apartment and I'm having to cut down nursery hours significantly and will have to work from home with him. I’m looking for all the money-saving tips I can get.

I’d love to hear from you savvy mums who really know how to make it work!

I recently discovered toy libraries in my area which I think is incredible, but I know there’s so much more out there. I'm talking about everything - ways to save on groceries, low-cost or free activities for kids, budget-friendly shopping hacks, resources to help with bills, and any financial advice you swear by. Please, hit me with all the tips you’ve got!

Weather is getting warmer so walks, parks, picnics. Also the library for books and see if there are other free activities there.
Look at the kids eat free info on MN for the school holidays.

2 years old, I am pursuing a masters at the moment (horrible timing now, I know!), will live off child maintenance, child benefit and student loans until August, after which I will take on a full-time job.

Very amicable with dad, but he will pay only what he is legally entitled to which is understandable, it's around £500 a month. I will be taking on majority childcare - DS will probably be with dad every other weekend

My family all live abroad so no external help otherwise sadly

Have you looked at whether you qualify for universal credit? I'm aware there are some rules around studying but it's certainly worth enquiring as you may get some help with childcare and rent costs.

Ma'am, I am just trying to get financial advice and not list too much outing information. This is my stepdaughter whom I very much intend on still seeing, however, am not tied to legally/financially. Are you here to help or play investigator

For goodness sake you lot, the OP has already stated that the second child is her stepdaughter who she intends to go on seeing. To me, this says that the second child will NOT be living with her! Sometimes people on here are in such a rush to rip people apart, that they don't even stop long enough to read the thread properly!

Suzuki76 · 05/04/2025 16:45

Yeah, tbh I think the fact that the other thread was phrased as "We have a 7 year old girl at home" makes it entirely plausible!
