I want to quit my job

Should I?

I’m 41. Single. No kids. Paid off flat. About 80,000 in savings. No debt.

I work in a profession which has moderate demand. I work for a small business, recently taken over by a new owner. The new owner is horrible. Passive aggressive, very money hungry, toxic. Likely bipolar. I’ve gone from loving my job to totally hating it and feeling burnt out. I can’t stomach the thought of work until I have a rest and reset.

Ive always been responsible and valued security. I’ve always had a plan. But I’m so close to packing it all in and resigning. But….then what? Yoga retreat in Bali? Lounge by the pool for a month (I’m in Sydney)?!

What would you do in my situation? AIBU to resign without a plan?

You clearly need to leave you current workplace but how you go about quitting depends on how likely you are to get another job. If it would be easy then go for it, a yoga retreat in Bali sounds amazing. If not, then start job hunting. Maybe look at switching careers to something you enjoy more?

MissHollysDolly · 03/04/2025 20:48

It depends what your other outgoings are and how long the 80k will last you. Why can’t you look for other jobs and take a month off before you start?

loveforautumn · 03/04/2025 20:48

Quit. No job should make you miserable! You've got the savings to chill out for a few weeks, take advantage of that and refresh

Beyondburnout · 03/04/2025 20:49

If it's a small.business can you fo freelance?

ThisPinkBee · 03/04/2025 20:55

Loads of people take sabbaticals and breaks mid career. 80k can disappear pretty quick though so you do need a plan of sorts.

Didimum · 03/04/2025 21:28

What are the specifics of the new owner’s behaviours? Surely money hungry is a given for a business owner?

recklessgran · 03/04/2025 21:34

Oh definitely quit OP and have a life for a while. I'd allocate a portion of savings to this project and have a rest - perhaps 3 months off, a few holidays and a reset while you think what you really want to do with the rest of your life. You're in a great financial position and I really don't think you'll regret it. Hope you have a great time - you're young enough to reinvent yourself.

CherubEarrings · 03/04/2025 21:38

What an ignorant post. OP you are not a doctor so don't be so ignorant about a serious health condition.

okydokethen · 03/04/2025 21:41

Oh wow your plan is your financial and relationship freedom! Go enjoy the world or whatever you would like to do.
dont let the job ruin you, take a break and re focus -you’re in a great position !

Plmnki · 03/04/2025 22:17

Assumed you meant £80k in savings which was impressive. Then realised you meant AUD 80k which is … like bottle tops. Or lire. So yeah.

By all means take a break. but then. What are you going to do next? What are you going to do for the next 25 yrs until you can draw super? Retrain? Find another niche? You just need a plan.

TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack · 03/04/2025 22:18

get another job, then leave

Take 2 months off in between

It’s about £38k so hardly bottle tops.

The OP could definitely take a month out if she wanted!!

Yes my sympathy evaporated when I saw the ignorant comment about a serious mental illness being used as an insult.

I have a friend with bipolar that lives in fear of anyone finding out her diagnosis due to this type of ignorance. This needs to be called out every time.

Edited

When she can range from calm and happy one day to hurling insults and a face like thunder within a few hours, I frankly don’t care. The woman should not own a business and have employees given her mental state. I’ll add that most people are considering leaving as a direct consequence of this behaviour.

It’s actually the equivalent of 80k in pounds. So a decent amount. I just don’t hav the strength or motivation to job hunt. I think I just need a few months off from….work/life. I need a reset. I’m actually on a week off now and absolutely dreading Monday.

Aside from the anger that she projects, she is scatty and unorganised. Raising prices weekly without any rhyme or reason. No communication about this. Ignores client complaints. I could go on.
