Can you lower the slit on this bridesmaid dress? Does it need it?

I have found a dress for my bridesmaids but some are not a fan of the slit. Does anyone good with fabric know if a slit can be lowered? But if it was would it not be a bit too covered?

The slit is only just above the knee and the dress is otherwise very modest, full sleeves with shoulders covered. Chest modest and only a small amount of back on a floor length gown.

I wouldn’t alter the slit at all, I think it needs to be where it is for flowing movement. You’re not going to get full exposed thigh with that height or anything

The dress is lovely, I think, but I agree with your bridesmaids about the slit.

If it could be covered a few centimetres, it would be less exposing. As it is, when they sit down, it could be too revealing for them. I think they’d want to feel comfortable, not tugging at the dress.

I bet a seamstress could do something. It looks as though there’s enough fabric.

I think if you lowered/closed the slit, it would probably be too tight on the skirt? It might be better to put a small panel of another fabric underneath at the top, like a lace or something.

Although if it was me I'd just find another dress my bridesmaids were happy to wear.

I love the back!

I think the slit spoils the dress. I notice lots of bridesmaids dresses have them. They don’t need them and they don’t enhance them.

I think the bridesmaids who have tried it on said they just think the slit ruins the dress. And when they sit it would have the potential to be too much. I want my mates to be able to have a few drinks and not have to worry about exposing too much of themselves

Love the dress hate the slit. I think it will be annoying for them to walk in like their leg will keep popping out and too revealing when sitting.

toomuchfaff · 03/04/2025 14:22

A good seamstress could either lower the slit or add in some lace along the slit line in a v so the dress isn't brought in but the modesty is increased, had the same question with some dresses for my wedding. Simple to do!

Great dress - love the colour.

I was going to suggest the same as @toomuchfaff, some lace in a matching (or even contrasting) colour to take the length to the knee could look cool!

lolarosea · 03/04/2025 14:38

Yes you should be able to sew it closed without any extra fabric but if you sew it all the way down the skirt won't move much, you'll also have a seam down where the slit is.

purplecorkheart · 03/04/2025 14:42

I agree with the Bridemaids about the slit. I have very thick legs and that slit would be a nightmare for me.

I agree with getting a lace panel put in rather than sewing it shut.

Agree. I hate slits.

Another vote for getting a fabric panel inserted in some way. Those who say but it's only just above the knee - well, that's on this model; I'm long bodied and anything like that is always far higher than intended on me.

Hope you can find something better or that modifications work out well.
