Work want to change my contract

AIBU to seek legal advice? Or does anyone here know where I stand?

I very much enjoy my job, and I am good at it. I've been there 2 years at the end of the month. I work from home fully. My contract is a fully remote contract, it hasn't ever been different. Some people do have different (office based) contracts, but no-one in my role.

Today I have found out that they now want to have us working from head office - ideally 4 days per week but they've cautiously agreed to 2 days per week. They have stated they will change our contracts to enforce this.

Head office is 1 hours drive away in normal commuting traffic. I would never have taken the job had it been offered as hybrid initially. We are a one car family, 2 primary age children. DH and I share drop offs and pick up and we do utilise wrap around care however going to head office would involve using more. My issues are not around working in the office but how far away it is, the commute time, additional costs in petrol, wear and tear and wrap around care and the impact on our home life - my kids would need to stop some activities or we'd need to get a second car - an expensive we can't afford on top of the increased other costs.

I am looking for another job but the job market in my field is a little slow at the moment.

WIBU to seek legal advice?

No seek legal advice and speak to the union if you're in one

Take legal advice, but I suspect your employer can probably do this. You don’t have to accept the change, but if you don’t then they could dismiss you (as long as they follow the correct process)

There’s quite a bit of information on the ACAS website

Absolutely get advice, consult your HR if you’ve got one and look at your current contract. They shouldn’t be able to unilaterally change terms to a permanent contract.
