Isn’t it absolutely shocking

The government sold our utility companies to private equity groups and now they are financially ruining us whilst they line their pockets with profits

While the water companies hardly invest in their facilities and cause mass pollution in our rivers etc

Yep! The super-rich have brought up all the worlds resources and are now selling them back to us for 10 x the price.

It’s other stuff as well. Netflix is now £12.99, my yearly Microsoft office subscription is £84.99 - I’m sure it was only £60 or so a couple of years ago. Feels like we’re being absolutely gouged.

I think I read Martin from MSE talking about this. It includes an AI addition or something, but if you don’t want that then it is cheaper.

here it is www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2025/02/microsoft-365-price-hike/

It wouldn't be so bad if there was an end in sight, or at least a plateau for a couple/few years but we just see it continuing.

Councils are going to continue to raise council tax by the highest they can, because the costs of human care is exponentially rising. And we import most of our essentials, particularly food and with the change in climate (hottest first day ever of May for instance) makes food supplies much more uncertain, so farmers will need to get the highest prices for the produce they have.

But what to do? We have a society that, for complex reasons, finds it more difficult to look after family members without state help and no one wants to sacrifice anything, or most certainly not enough, and this is worldwide not just local, to help the planet adapt to continuing increasing carbon emissions.

This is the result.

There is definitely a shift towards more people having less disposable income.

No one wants to invest in renewable energy now so that we have a more stable energy supply in 20 years. So we will put expensive sticking plasters over everything until our kids have to pay for what is needed in one go, yay go us!

On the plus side we do live in a temperate climate, the population of the UK will be able to not fry or freeze as quickly as some.

My water has gone up from £100 per month to £296 so I'm assuming a mistake somewhere. Just bracing myself for a 3 hour long session of being on hold to get it sorted.

MoominMai · 01/05/2025 20:51

Yup, all the usual and my council tax has gone up to £190 pcm so total £2,280 and that’s with a single persons discount! It’s a frightening time to be sure to be living alone and in a mortgaged property to boot with everything rising around me!

£296 a month that’s outrageous! Did you get an answer?

QwestSprout · 07/05/2025 19:14

Council tax up 8% (around £20 a month)
Don't pay for water (Scotland)
Energy is fixed until September
Broadband/Mobiles went up by about £3 or something each
Car insurance actually came down by £80 this year (paid annually)

All negligible, basically.
