I know I'm being unreasonable and even unprofessional, but I need to vent.

So in my previous job, I basically fully vin charge of this type of tasks and would bring in business in the millions. Some of my projects included big brands such as Ford, Amazon, Adidas, Totale, etc... I really enjoyed it too, and was offered to do it as my FT day job at some point but the starts didn't align.

Anyway, in my new job, a similar project came in that was biggest than any other contract we could have. I volunteered to do it as a passion project because I had the experience etc... They were a bit pessimistic we could win, but I knew it was worth the shot.

Fast forward to at some point last week they gave me a "nanny" that has been bossing me around and didn't give any credit for my previous experience. I would have done it fairly differently. What really annoys me is that nobody has the same experience as me (in terms of size of contract).

I'll still do it, but obviously not with the same gusto and feel very demoralised.

It's not a new role, I've been here for 6+ months, and what I volunteered to do is not part of my day job.

And genuinely I have more experience than said "nanny".

They might not have seen/have evidence of your experience so just making sure.
Or they have an issue with you.

was offered to do it as my FT day job at some point but the starts didn't align.

what does this mean? Why aren’t you still at old job?

With just the information given I agree you need to just get on with your job spec and don’t be offering to do passion projects. If you’ve got all this experience and skill surely you can look for something new.

Soootired23 · 02/04/2025 16:02

A week? We were going to ignore it until I said it was a decent opportunity.

My manager said it was ok for me to get involved as long as it didn't take me away from my day job and was basically kept as a passion project/hobby.

So basically the director of that department (the one that was in charge of this type of "project") wanted me to officially move to her team, but my then manager wouldn't allow me to move until it had been signed off by the CRO. What I didn't know, is that said director already knew she was leaving so I was going to be her backfill. (Don't blame her for being secretive).

I got an opportunity for more money somewhere else so I moved. Then I got offered my current job which was a little bump, but that specific bit of my skillset is not used at all, so I was happy to use it again :)

Sounds as if the new company would prefer you to continue to do the role you have been hired for. I also don’t understand why you are doing this in addition to your role as a passion project which you are essentially working for free.

Because I actually really really enjoy working on that type of project!

I was very successful at it too, but for some reason as a sole role is not very well paid.

You haven't an argument to make unless you won the contract and that it's been proven worthwhile.

Otherwise, they are right, it wasn't worth while and it's more important to them that you do they are currently paying you to do.

If it has been a success, then you are in a strong position to suggest you do more of it.

Soootired23 · 02/04/2025 17:45

But I volunteered to do it in my free time (which was fine!) I just wanted to work on something I enjoy and have experience with. I can do it on my own, not someone to boss me around, otherwise is oislnt have volunteered.

I think you’re regretting volunteering
and the company is regretting accepting your suggestion you volunteer
stand down and focus on the job you were hired to do and channel your “passion” on to that

The company don’t seem to agree that you “can do it on your own”

Soootired23 · 02/04/2025 20:33

Then why would I have volunteered? The first thing this nanny said to me is that he hates that type of project

I see it as their loss really

This sounds frustrating all round. I would try and keep the nanny involved but at arms length, and then once you win the business, have a big row about who takes the credit. I’m also unprofessional when I need to be!!
