Who should pay the return postage on Vinted?

I bought a shirt on Vinted for £10 - advertised as size 16, Brand new with tags. 3 photos - front and back of shirt and one with the label to prove it was Joules. Size label not shown on photos.

Shirt has arrived, tags in, looks good except it is a size 18 and too big for me.

I want to return this as ‘Significantly not as described’ on the grounds that it’s a different size to what is was advertised as, and I would never have bought it as a size 18 as I would have known it would be too big.

Seller refused a refund at first as it’s ’only one size different’ but has grudgingly now agreed but thinks I should pay the return postage. I have refused as it’s her mistake, I’ll send the shirt back but I’m not paying to do so. So, before I message her again, AIBU?

YABU - you should pay the return postage, it’s only a size
YANBU - seller should pay return postage, she’s sent something different to what was advertised.

Vinted rules are the buyer pays. Its in the T&C's when you sign up.
The seller only has to offer if they feel like it.

I doubt in your situation you will get the seller to cover it (I would if I had made a sizing mistake)

PIPsqueakybum · 02/04/2025 12:57

Yep the buyer pays, unless the seller feels kind which it doesn’t look like they will. All you can do is pay for the return (if the cost of the item makes it worth doing), and then leave bad feedback. Or just list it yourself and sell it on, and leave bad feedback.

FanofLeaves · 02/04/2025 12:57

It’s down to the seller. If I’ve made a mistake, I do pay for return postage for the buyer. If they just don’t like it or I think they’re trying to pull a fast one, they can pay.

ChloeCannotCanCan · 02/04/2025 13:05

So it’s down to the seller by the looks of things! I do think as it’s her mistake she should pay the return postage….

I love Vinted, until something goes wrong and then it’s a total PITA!

No, it isn't. As a pp said already, it lies with the buyer according to Vinted's Ts&Cs. It's unfair, but you already agreed to this when you signed up. Ebay is the way forward if you want the seller to pay postage for returns.

TwistedWonder · 02/04/2025 13:11

When it’s been mis advertised then I’ve always asked the seller to pay for return postage and they always have.

Vinted won’t get involved though they say it’s between you and the seller to agree

ChloeCannotCanCan · 02/04/2025 13:12

No I think it is down to the ethics of the seller - I will accept it’s in Vinteds T&Cs, but ultimately there is the option that the seller can pay the return postage when they have made the mistake, and that decision is up to them.

Sadly OP it’s on you to pay but it’s a bit shitty of the seller really. As a seller I would pay in this situation but that’s coz I’m a good seller who doesn’t want to screw people over.

I would leave a factual but honest review and 1 *. Won’t help you but may help others to give a wide berth.

Gundogday · 02/04/2025 13:21

On the basis that you’d loose £3(?) on postage, is it worth selling it on Vinted yourself? If you sell it for £10, you haven’t lost anything. Although I agree, in a ‘not as described’ situation like this, the seller should pay. Different if it were a ‘didn’t like’ situation.

APurpleSquirrel · 02/04/2025 13:33

I had this exact same situation. Item arrived & was a completely different size that didn’t fit. Like you I found out I had to pay the return postage meaning I’d be out of pocket, no item & the seller gets the item back to send on. I ended up selling it on via FB & got my money back that way. Now I’m super careful of checking photos for sizes.

LumpyandBumps · 02/04/2025 14:03

I’m having a similar argument with an Amazon seller at present. Item arrived 8 days after delivery estimate as it took them 7 days to get it to the courier. ( I had to buy one from a second seller in the meantime). They have accepted the return but won’t budge on return postage costs. It will cost me nearly the full cost to return the item.
I have another 24 hours before I can involve Amazon but I will pay return costs if I have to as otherwise the seller just gets away with poor service.

ChloeCannotCanCan · 02/04/2025 15:05

I suspect I’m going to end up having to pay for the shirt and hoping to recoup my money by reselling it. For that to happen though, someone has to agree to pay £13 plus fees and shipping to cover my outlay. I know it’s only a few quid and there are greater problems in the world, but it’s the principle!

I’ve found that Amazon have been pretty good at resolving these things when I had problems. I bought a robot vacuum cleaner for £300 and was delivered the right size box with an etch-a-sketch in it! Amazon didn’t sound too surprised, wanted a couple of photos and gave me an immediate refund.

Yes, I think I’ll end up reselling it.

If i’d just changed my mind I would pay the return postage….

oh well - anyone want a new shirt? £10, one careful owner, one not-so-careful owner 😂

Sizing is my absolute bugbear on Vinted. The amount of sellers who get the sizing wrong is phenomenal.

I buy American brands and the amount of sellers who say it’s a size 10 when really it’s a size UK 14 really gets on my nerves.

Vinted should have it in their T&Cs that sellers must show the size label.

And the ones who put size 10 in the heading and size 12 in the size details.

And don’t get me started on the ones who say I’m a 12 and it fits me and not show the size label.

Buyer beware!

And breathe Grin

ChloeCannotCanCan · 02/04/2025 15:26

Oh yes, the US/UK size confusion! So annoying…

I think I’ll be actively asking for a picture of the size label before buying anything in future!

TwistedWonder · 02/04/2025 15:30

I’ve bought and sold over 500 items on Vinted and I always photograph the size label plus comment if it’s true to size or if not what size it’s best suited to. It’s pretty basic tbh.

I just received a return request for a Vintage coat with full measurements and the buyer is using "significantly not as described.." 🙄. In my case, I won't be offering to pay for postage.

mondaytosunday · 15/11/2025 19:57

My DD bought a coat and the description said ‘fits a 12’. When it arrived the label says 16 and she was drowning in it. She tried to convince herself it worked but now has decided to resell it and will include the label! So annoying.
She did get a dress which had a stain on it back and front and the seller refunded and said to just keep it as she couldn’t resell it anyway. 😁
And why don’t people measure the length of skirts? She has to ask every time.

NotTonightDeidre · 16/11/2025 08:32

It can wotk both ways. I had someone buy a pair of jeans from my Vinted. I always show size labels.

The person opened a "significantly not as described" case against me because they didn't fit. Apparently all their other jeans in the same size fit & mine were wrong.

They sent me a photo to prove they were a different size to their own. I traced around one pair & moved the paper over the other pair to show they weren't as different as they claimed.

I also explained that "not fitting" is not a valid reason to return when they're exactly as advertised. I got a reply asking if they were supposed to just accept things without trying them?! They argued the toss for quite some time & then got arsey when I left negative feedback.

If it’s the seller’s error then legally shouldn’t they pay the return postage?

That’s not true. I recently had a return and the return postage was automatically charged to me, the seller.
