To think traditional English food is overrated?

I’ve always heard people say English food is bland or uncreative, and to be honest, I kind of see their point. Apart from a good roast dinner or fish and chips, what actually stands out? AIBU to think that other cuisines just do it better?

OK just for the sake of argument British food is crap....

Who is going to tell Gordon Ramsey?

Or Tom Kerridge, Mary Berry, Rick Stein, Delia Smith, Si King and all the other chefs and TV chefs that cook fabulous British food. Even Raymond Blanc praises great British food.

Having just watched the banquet at Blenheim palace for great British menu I can’t say anything negative about our cuisine I was blown away with the skill and artistry of it all man me very proud

🤔Wonder if OP will ever come back.

I only ever heard people insulting English food. It's a pretty common opinion and joke.

Then I moved here and encountered my MIL's traditional cooking. Sunday roast with all the trimmings, pies, casseroles, and the puddings. I love how everything is home made from scratch with fresh ingredients.

I would now DIE to uphold the honour of that woman's crumble.

It's funny to me that the British who tend to insult their own cuisine often hold up my nation as the bastion of adventurous culinary delight... when even I have to admit it all just tastes of lime and coconut 🤣

He's really know as a classical French chef though (not that he does much cheffing these days).

Yes but they don't scare me.

Er South America is still America.

Er and Mexico is in North America, which is where tomatoes were first cultivated.

I'm not sure why you felt it necessary to preface using "Er." Don't know why you got your shorts in a knot. I was just pointing out some info in a geeky way which was why I used the emoji. I guess you took it as a jab? It wasn't. 🙂

LuckySantangelo35 · 02/04/2025 09:06

Yorkshire puddings are bland and boring

RampantIvy · 02/04/2025 09:07

It's interesting that a lot of the non Brits on this thread say otherwise.

When I was a student my best friend was Chinese. She used to cook traditional Chinese food for us at her house. I used to cook traditional English food for her at mine. She loved my roast beef with all the trimmings.

I love cold roast chicken, hot jersey royals with butter and a crisp salad with salad cream in the summer. Would the critics of English food find that bland?

God yes. That’s boring and bland as hell. Salad cream…

Wow what sort of post is this @ThatJoyousCyanReader do I take it you're not British/English? If you're not I don't give a flying f about your opinion.

Us Brits are a live and let live lot, so you eat wtf you like and leave us to decide what we want to eat. Many gastro pubs serve British fayre and both are fabulous and do well out of it.

I can cook many cuisines, my dad was a chef, but I measure cuisine by my fussy dogs. They won't eat pasta, Mediterranean, Thai, Chinese, Mexican (without heavy spices obviously) etc. but by gosh they wolf English food.

I don't think what you feed your dogs is quite the flex you seem to think it is.

Itsgettinghotouthere · 02/04/2025 09:16

If itbis cooked well, seasonal so the vegetables etc at at their best it is amazing.

Loub1987 · 02/04/2025 09:18

It’s all about variety, I would be bored eating any countries traditional cuisine all the time. About a decade ago I lived in a small city in China for a year. There was no real option for internal cuisine. By the end of the year, I was so sick of the delicious local food and was desperate for a Shepard’s pie.

Swiftie1878 · 02/04/2025 09:18

The Brits do great comfort/winter food, but are a bit ‘meh’ in the summer, imo.

Homemade salad cream is great, it's just a slightly more acidic and thinner mayonnaise really.

No.
Will chat more about it tomorrow night if you want. 😄
It's going on for 1:30am over here on the west coast of north America and I'm very tired having been up all night with my baby and 3 year old... 🥱

I disagree, but I cook from scratch and watch a lot of cookery shows and get loads of inspiration from them and online.

DataColour · 02/04/2025 09:25

I'm from a south asian country and I'm a pretty good cook of all types of cuisines and cook from scratch everyday. I LOVE English food. Cottage or shepards pie, roasts, fish and chips, pies, all the various cakes and puddings, what's not to like?!
I'd take a roast over a burrito any day!
My kids love spice and eclectic food, but their favourite is still a roast. Perhaps it's the cooking of it - you need to do it well.

The issue is the stodge. It’s always big globs of (commercial) salad cream not reasonable amounts of homemade versions. Let’s be real here.

Yes, find it very underwhelming and overrated by English people. Just a load of mash and variants of potato. Still, could be worse, could be Scandinavian cuisine, or even worse, the Netherlands.

How's Scandinavian food worse than English food. Have you spent a significant amount of time in a Scandinavian country having every day food? My extended family in a Scandinavian country love English cheddar they like the shop bought basic stuff as well. However, maybe it is your taste buds but I wouldn't say it is any worse or better than English food.

It isn't compulsory to eat stodgy food. It is perfectly possible to eat a low carb British diet.

You seem to lack imagination and creativity when it comes to food.
