Just how bad is Roblox for children ? Is it damaging to them ? Or is it just a computer game that is completely fine for kids ? We are talking kids 7+
not looking to judge or be judged just wondering what other parents thoughts are on it ! X

The parental controls moderate the kind of games that can be played as well.

You can tell we don't have roblox.

The article quoted made that sound like that was accessible with the parent controls in place..

Non violent games are moderated for children’s accounts. The issue is Roblox will say adults play it too which is why they keep the more violent games

grumpypedestrian · 04/04/2025 10:11

I guess I just don’t understand how parents can be aware of, and ignore, the issues of Roblox with violence and grooming.

The article proved that parental controls don’t stop children accessing unsuitable games.

The site is dangerous and unsuitable for children, there are other ways to entertain your child that don’t mean using a site that encourages pedophilia.

We are also a gaming household, that’s why we don’t allow Roblox.

I’m actually quite shocked at the responses to that very harrowing list of issues with Roblox!

How prideful to you have to be to not admit that allowing your kid, even with ‘parental controls’ switched on, on a site that has games where you beat up homeless and pregnant women, is really not a good idea?!

Roblox does not sound like the sort of platform I would ever support - even if you could guarantee a ‘safe’ experience.

CaffeineNChaos · 04/04/2025 10:27

It’s what the game allows them access to that’s the problem. I use an app called famisafe as it monitors everything and flags up any key words in conversations that could be bad

Cosycover · 04/04/2025 10:30

JandamiHash · 04/04/2025 00:57

Just enable parental controls.

My kids spend ages on a fashion show game, they absolutely love it (and I may or may not have created an account to join in)

Dress to Impress is awesome 😁

grumpypedestrian · 04/04/2025 10:38

But why are you ignoring the issues? Why are you using a site that encourages pedophilia then blaming parents for being lazy?

Regardless of the games you like and play, this platform has unsuitable, violent games and it’s proven parental controls don’t work with the site.

You can’t call parents lazy and irresponsible for not monitoring whilst allowing your child to use the platform. My daughter was unhappy about not being allowed it at first but now is far happier playing Co op board games with us. Stop blaming parents instead of addressing why a site allows this to happen.

as long as you teach your kids appropriate online behaviour, monitor what they're doing, and use parental controls its fine.

Both my kids are now teens and been using it for years, we never had any issue with it.. they both knew not to use the chats, to never give out any personal information, and i watched like a hawk and used all controls available.

Watch me, i absolutely can and will, because if you're letting your kids on Roblox and NOT monitoring it//using the parental controls/teaching them appropriate internet usage then you ARE lazy and irresponsible.

edited to add: The internet is a dangerous place, the above should go for ANY public access website you let your kids on, paedophiles are just as capable of trying to connect via minecraft, or youtube, or penguin, as they are Roblox. Teaching your kids internet safety, monitoring their usage, and using the controls provided are the only safe way to teach them how to behave.

If you 'protect' them by blocking them from any/all risk by not allowing them on those sites they will either find a way around it, or be incredibly vulnerable when you do finally lift the bans.

grumpypedestrian · 04/04/2025 10:53

Of course monitoring and teaching online safety is important and it’s great you’re doing this. Part of online safety though is realising as adults when sites aren’t safe regardless of parental controls and monitoring.

You can monitor all you like, it won’t stop the site from allowing grooming to continue. Just don’t support a site that has these problems.

as i said, mine are Teens, on the older end (16/18) so were using Roblox in its early days when this wasn't a recognised problem and there were very very few parental controls like their are now.

I honestly think some of the safeguards they have in place now encourage parents to assume the website will take responsibilty for it themselves, and therefore let teaching the kind of internet safety we had to learn and teach by the wayside, thinking its fine, when its LESS fine than it was 8-10 years ago.

that is what i find lazy and irresponsible. The safeguards should be seen as EXTRA to teaching internet safety.

Cosycover · 04/04/2025 11:09

Like any massive online platform, Roblox unfortunately has had incidents, of course it has. That’s a problem across the entire internet, not something unique to Roblox.

Roblox has a huge moderation team, filters chats and offers extensive parental controls. Could things be better? Sure. No system is perfect, but to say they encourage this behaviour and parents who allow children to play it are also supporting this is ridiculous.

It's also worth mentioning that Roblox has a ton of educational and creative value to it. My kids have learned coding, game design, even math and spelling by using this game.

If anything, we should be pushing for better digital literacy and parental guidance rather than blaming the entire platform for the actions of a few creeps.

Hankunamatata · 04/04/2025 11:12

Mine are teens but played it in primary. Always had full parental controls, they weren't allowed to chat online. I let them use my phone to what's app friends while playing. They had to use it downstairs in my full view

grumpypedestrian · 04/04/2025 11:13

I mean, it’s hardly a few creeps, read the article. I know I’ve made the right decision by not allowing it in our house.

Cosycover · 04/04/2025 11:14

Fair enough that's your decision. And it's also other parents decisions if they are comfortable letting their children play it.

WinterBones · 04/04/2025 11:15

and that is your decision, just please don't skip the internet literacy and safety lessons with your kids, because i've seen shit happen with kids who were restricted.. they hide stuff, get up to things you don't know about and then get into trouble.

This. Hell of a lot of minimising going on.

I really cannot get my head around the ‘well you need to teach them internet safety otherwise they will have no idea’ argument. I mean, yes it is correct - but not at bloody nine years old for crying out loud!! My approach is to hold out for as long as possible giving my son any device of his own or having an access to the internet. Once I deem him to be old enough, I will teach him responsible use then. But it won’t be any time soon and definitely not when he is 9!

is 9 too young for stranger danger lessons or something? because thats essentially what internet safety is.

don't share personal information
don't talk to strangers
don't go into private spaces with people you don't know
don't accept presents from people you don't know
report anything questionable to a parent/person in authority.

I mean, i was teaching that shit to my kids from the moment they were old enough to understand.

Cosycover · 04/04/2025 11:21

My youngest is 6 and had an Internet safety assembly last week.

grumpypedestrian · 04/04/2025 11:26

Like I say, we teach internet safety and how to be online and recognise and report things. We monitor. We also decide when sites just aren’t safe full stop.

Don’t assume banning sites means lazy parenting and not bothering with teaching online safety.

Probably as they’ve no choice because so many people are letting their kids on the internet at very young ages

No, of course it isn’t. My 7 year old has been taught all of those things too - but I see allowing him to play outside and interact with the real world entirely necessary and so it is important he knows how to. I do not see having access to the internet at 7 necessary in the slightest. He just doesn’t need it.

TheHappyBiscuit · 20/06/2025 08:15

I’ve seen, Roblox isn’t inherently bad for kids around 7 and up, but like anything online, it depends on how it’s used. The social aspect can be great for creativity but also tricky if not monitored. Setting limits and checking in on what they’re playing helps a lot.

On OGU, I’ve seen lots of parents swapping tips on safe gaming and even finding legit accounts for kids, so the community really gets how important balance is.

It's not just the chat function in Roblox that can be dangerous. It has inappropriate content mixed in with the kids stuff, so they can come across a sex party within one of the. "Kids games" it's just not safe. Also from a cyber security perspective it's not safe, it's known for hackers. My husband works in cyber security and it's one of very few games he said 100% no to. OGUsers is known for it's account hacking so not sure I'd trust that
