To think a 20 minute break isn’t enough?

I work in catering/hospitality but have done a lot of retail and in all of them it’s always been standard for a 20 minute unpaid break in a 6hr shift.

My current employer is really good about making sure that we always get our breaks so we can have a rest and something to eat, which I am very grateful for but I’m increasingly finding that 20 minutes just isn’t long enough!

I always bring in my own lunch but by the time I’ve gathered my things, sat down, eaten my food and been to the loo I’m rushing to get back in time. I know a full lunch hour wouldn’t work for us as a business but I feel like 30 minutes would be more reasonable. Under 18’s do get half an hour and as an increasingly achy 40 something I wish we got the same! Or aibu and 20 minutes is plenty?

I work in hospitality. I work 10+hours a shift. We’re meant to get 20 mins break but realistically, we don’t get it.

I've never worked anywhere with less than an hour's lunch break, usually more. Anything less than an hour seems absolutely crazy!

I'll say it again, try working in a school. 25 min lunch break. 5 mins lost as at least one pupil needs to be spoken to after a lesson, a wee and walk to the staffroom is another 5 mins. Need to be at lineups 5 mins before the next lesson starts leaving a grand total of 10 mins for lunch. 7 mins if you subtract the 3 mins the microwave takes to heat lunch.

If I had to work 6 hours with only a 20 minute break I’d definitely collapse.
slightly different I volunteer and we get a 10-15 minute break per hour.

I think unless you’re in an office the whole ‘lunch hour’ idea isn’t the reality. I work as train crew and our breaks are very erratic and often not when you’d even be needi by or wanting to eat. We do benefit from strict rules about the lengths of our breaks according to our shift length but they are still often rushed as the allotted “walking time” to get from the train to the break room doesn’t account for passengers and delays and enquiries.
