To think that saving money isn’t optional?

It feels like common sense but I’m constantly surprised by how many people don’t save at all. At the very minimum, everyone should have an emergency fund - yet plenty of people live pay check to paycheck with no backup.

AIBU to think that saving should be non-negotiable? Or do some people genuinely have valid reasons for not doing it?

Through every generation, there have been times when people aren’t bringing in enough money to save. 🤷‍♀️

Its not rocket science, 🙄

If you are on benefits then you aren't 'allowed' savings. Anything over 6000 and you start having money deducted from your allowance so having three months put by for me would literally 'cost' me money. So no, some people literally cannot save for things like a new car etc without paying a premium to do so.

And before the comments start...£6000 really is not a lot to have put by for emergencies so no, 'if you have that money spare you should not even ned benefits' isn't really a sound bit of advice

err??? if people are paycheck to paycheck they don’t have the money to save. what a privileged post

Everyone can apply pie chart budgeting. I've done it even when it cuts into my lifestyle and I'm bulk buying instant noodles for every meal doing only volunteering as my fun/social activities. Brits are really lazy at planning financially I find and then have a real victim complex when they can't work their way up the ladder - it's sad. There are also many resources on how to cook using food bank staples - there is no excuse not to save. It's not privilege it's just common sense and the path to empowerment.

I don't understand the saltiness. If someone is taking financial responsibility for themselves by why do you care?? Let them be! They are probably finding more public services than those who either can't or don't take financial responsibility for themselves tbh. In most other countries being financially responsible is the norm

But if it was mandatory, it would just be a tax. It’s a small step from making savings mandatory to just confiscating access to even more of people’s own hard earned money, isn’t it?

And by making personal Pension contributions from salary mandatory, the Government have already done that!
