AIBU to be worried about finding this in sons room. No one in the house is on anything like this. It was on floor under a pile of clothes. I tried to take one out to get markings off it to see if I could identify it but it just crumbled. Like it’s been crushed.

Can someone please help by telling me what it is. Son is 13 years old. He’s a quiet and fairly naive wee boy. Usually really risk averse. I will speak to him when he’s out of school but in the mean time! What is this?

It’s thyroid medication. Eltroxin.

Sadcafe · 31/03/2025 09:27

The troxin ending would suggest it’s some kind of thyroid tablet, best to just ask him where it’s from and why he has it

FeministUnderTheCatriarchy · 31/03/2025 09:28

Troxin is an antibiotic I believe, but it looks like there's more to the word

TeapotTitties · 31/03/2025 09:28

Well Google told me it's thyroid medication OP.

What did it tell you?

BlondeMummyto1 · 31/03/2025 09:28

Some kids probably picked them up at home, brought them into school and passed them out not having a clue what they are or what they’re doing.

No it isn't - it is thyroid replacement

FairlyTired · 31/03/2025 09:31

Google says thyroid medication can sometimes be used to aid weight loss or performance in sports. Not that it's meant to be, but as a recreational off prescription use.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 31/03/2025 09:32

As people have said it's a thyroid hormone. Not routinely used recreationally, some athletes take it to lose weight but rare.

Marinacat · 31/03/2025 09:36

.

amoobaa · 31/03/2025 09:37

I thought thyroid medication too, as all the words looks similar to levothyroxine. Eltroxine must be the brand name for it.

There could be many explanations. it may be entirely innocent. However, it may also be worth being aware that, according to google:

  • Some individuals, including athletes, may take levothyroxine outside of medical indications, aiming to stimulate weight loss or improve energy levels, despite the lack of evidence supporting these claims.
  • There are reports of athletes seeking to use levothyroxine to gain an unfair advantage, potentially to "make weight" in weight-classified sports or to enhance performance.
  • Some individuals may falsely believe that levothyroxine can help with weight loss, although this is not a proven or recommended use.
TeapotTitties · 31/03/2025 09:39

No-one has to think thyroid medication because it is thyroid medication.

blcakgaragedoor · 31/03/2025 09:46

Ok. He’s a bigger for picking stuff up he finds and putting it in his pocket. I’m thinking that’s probably what he’d done because he isn’t an athlete.

Thyroid medication is not used for recreational purposes because it is slow-acting. No good for getting high! And very rarely misused for weight loss, so I think you can relax.

he sounds like me at that age! rocks, shiny things, bottle caps, string, elastic bands. My mum loved it 🤣

SweetnsourNZ · 23/11/2025 02:17

I would let his school know anyway. Some kids will hand drugs around to look the part even if they don't know what they are. When I was at primary school in the 70s a couple of boys handed around sleeping tablets, and 2 10 year old girls ended up in comas. The teacher thought they had fallen asleep as it was a hot afternoon but luckily another teacher who was a volunteer ambulance driver came in and noticed something amiss. They both survived BTW.

neverbeenskiing · 23/11/2025 03:56

Has he expressed any worries about his body image? Any talk about wanting to lose weight or gain muscle? If you have no reason to suspect disordered eating then most likely explanation is he found it, picked it up and put it in his pocket for no particular reason (some kids are still like magpies at this age!) but if he was fine I'd be checking his devices to make sure he hasn't been looking at any potentially harmful content around weight loss/body image.

blcakgaragedoor · 23/11/2025 08:35

we had a chat a couple days after I found it and I was very open and ready for him to confide. He found it lying on the floor on his class and lifted it to give to teacher after class then he completely forgot about it. I do believe him it’s exactly like something he would do. He’s a bit of an empty head.
