If you have a long walk to work...

Got a new job and the walk is 50 minutes.
I could do with more fresh air, more exercise, all the usual things. Anyone got a similar length walk and is it OK? (I know you cant all know my exact fitness etc etc )
But generally speaking?
I'm figuring when I was London based getting home took me an hour, and only 20 mins of that was on a bus.

Some colleagues did find it inconceivable that anyone would want to walk for that length of time though so be prepared for bemused comments!

This whole thread is making me laugh because just about every word of it rings true with my experience but especially this comment from @Deerrobin The world is divided into people who walk several miles and think nothing of it, and people who just can't imagine it to be something anyone would do. The second group don't seem to realise that often a door to door journey with waits at bus stops or going out of your way to and from a train station can take as long or longer than walking.

I used to walk 40 mins and I think its key to make sure you have a snack ready at end of the day before your walk home, as you'll be hungry, tired and irritable otherwise.

Fine in good weather. A bitch when it’s not.

So true.

I was caught out the other day when I was heading home from work and a chap I didn't know had just parked on a nearby road and asked me the town centre is walking distance. I wasn't quick thinking enough to just tell him it was about a mile and a quarter, I just said it was if he was used to walking.

Different people have a different views of what is reasonable to walk.

If you'd framed it as "my child's school is a 25 min walk away. WIBU to walk all the school runs?" you'd got people piling up to tell you it would be ridiculous to do anything else 🤣

That said, personally I found having a plan B lined up took the pressure off and made it enjoyable. Since cycling won't work for you, I'd be getting the bus occasionally or maybe budgeting for an occasional Uber just so you don't have a mountain to climb on the days you have a stinking cold, put your back out and have to get the cat to the vet before they shut.

Me and DH worked together about 10 miles from home. He would leave an hour earlier than me and I would drive and pick him up. It helped him lose about 3 stone in weight over a 3 year period, and he has kept most of it off over the next 15 years. Well worth doing.

I wouldn't like that walk to work every day. (Is it every day @Changedusernameforthis2 ?) If I was full time, and worked from home 3 days, and only had to do this walk on 2 days, then yeah maybe...

But not every day. Too many variables, too much risk of bad weather, (rain/snow/ice/high winds/freezing fog/hail/freezing temperatures,) and me sitting there all day struggling to thaw out, or struggling to dry out. Even in summer you risk rain and high winds.. OR you risk having to walk in 30 degrees C or more temperatures, which is also not great. Plus, I couldn't be arsed with an almost 2 hour round-trip walk every day on top of my 8+ hours at work.

I enjoy going for walks, when I feel like it, when I have time, when the weather isn't too bad/is nice, when I am off work (or after work.) Some days I CBA. I wouldn't want to HAVE to do almost 1 hour of walking (before work,) and then another almost 1 hour after. I am assuming it's a 3 mile walk.....? So a 6 mile round trip?

It's a no from me.

It's nice to see that othes enjoy it but it'd be a no from me too 🤣

I couldn't be bothered with it at all.

See, this is a perspective I just... don't share? Walking makes me feel better. I'd only not be well enough to walk if I wasn't well enough to work anyway. I look forward to walking. But it would be a dull world etc etc.

I walk fast so I do get sweaty if I walk to work in summer carrying a heavy backpack, and of course if it's pissing rain I get damp, but I shower when I get there anyway and I can shower off again when I get home if needed.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 04/04/2025 15:30

I used to walk 35 minutes to get to work, both ways when the evenings are lighter, but only one way the rest of the year as part of the walk was on an unlit footpath.

It was great, I really enjoyed it. Probably the only thing I miss now I WFH.

wildflowersplease · 04/04/2025 15:36

Mine is just over an hour and I absolutely love it. What else would you be doing for that length of time that's more worthwhile? Sitting?

It also means that when I get home I never have to think about finding some way to exercise or feel guilty if I decide not to. It's all been done in the course of my day.
