To not wash my fruit and veg

I just don’t. Never have.
Am I going to die from pesticide exposure or some other hideous hidden danger.

Am I the only person who doesn’t?

I always wash mine because of pesticides but I know at least one person who doesn't. I also know they don't wash the fruit they give out at school, unless it's washed before it's packed, but I doubt it.

Branleuse · 30/03/2025 21:10

I don't either unless it looks like it needs it

Namechange032025 · 30/03/2025 21:11

Sorry it's horrible. The pesticides, mud, handling. It takes 30 secs to wash.

Comedycook · 30/03/2025 21:11

Yes I always wash...I once got hideous food poisoning from unwashed spinach

Headingtowardsdivorce · 30/03/2025 21:12

I don't unless it has visible dirt on it. So far so good!

AquaPeer · 30/03/2025 21:12

I don’t because how could you wash off pesticides or bacteria that causes food poisoning with a cold rinse? It’s not as though you’re putting them in the dishwasher at 60c

NannyR · 30/03/2025 21:12

I don't, unless there is visible dirt on them. I figure that if they have been sprayed with pesticides that are designed to withstand rain, a quick rinse under the tap isn't going to do much anyway.

Lavender14 · 30/03/2025 21:13

Yeah pesticides,insects... just think of all the people who don't wash their hands after using the toilet in tesco who then pick up and inspect fruit and veg before putting it back to choose another one...

Always give a wash especially if you aren't cooking it.

Darkmorningsarethepits · 30/03/2025 21:13

Does a brief wash under the tap actually remove pesticides or are they more than on the surface?

OP posts:
Tieo · 30/03/2025 21:13

I always wash, the amount of handling they go through etc and storage facilities are pretty grim.

Mum2jenny · 30/03/2025 21:13

Never wash mine

Moveoverdarlin · 30/03/2025 21:14

Never ever wash fruit or veg.

No it doesn’t.

i did once have a housemate who washed her fruit and veg in washing up liquid and hot water but she was nuts and everyone I tell that story too agrees

myplace · 30/03/2025 21:16

Never washed anything.

I don’t think washing it gets rid of the bacteria anyway, you have to cook it ☹️

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 30/03/2025 21:16

Always wash. And I'm not someone obsessed with germs, just don't fancy food poisoning.

catsand · 30/03/2025 21:16

I never wash it, as I don’t see how a swish under the cold tap would make the slightest bit of difference.

Snackpocket · 30/03/2025 21:17

No me either unless there is visible soil to wash off!

MidnightPatrol · 30/03/2025 21:17

I only rinse items that I think someone else might have touched in the supermarket.

AquaPeer · 30/03/2025 21:19

countrysidedeficit · 30/03/2025 21:18

Have you not heard of E. coli?

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-36822962

“People in the UK have been advised to thoroughly wash mixed salad leaves amid concern that this food could be the source of a recent E. coli outbreak.”

the ecoli outbreak in question was 10 years ago. I think we’re over it now 🤣

It was supposed to be pre washed but I could actually taste mud and grit...I think there is a particular type of food poisoning that you get from soil, will have to google though....so yes washing the soil off is important.

weshallovercomeaswevedonebefore · 30/03/2025 21:19

Can someone who does wash theirs please tell us how rinsing under a cold tap actually kills germs?! As unless you’re using hot water, soap and scrubbing for 30 seconds or so, it’s going to do precisely nothing. So why do it?

Not even hot water, as the water it would need to be at least 60c to kill virus’, harmful bacteria. The only way is to cook it.

and obviously we all eat some
fruit and veg raw so that’s not realistic

Glitchymn1 · 30/03/2025 21:22

I wash it, because humans have handled it and after scrolling the “things you do when nobody is watching thread” why on earth would you not 🤣
