Big birthday present

A close relative is turning 60 next week. I decided to get her tickets to either the Abba voyage or similar. However, with tickets close to 100 quid I am thinking to buy a single ticket.

Am I being unreasonable reasonable for buying just 1 ticket instead of 2? I personally wouldn't want to go to such an event alone, but I know she is quite independent and probably won't mind but I just feel slightly bad. I equally can't afford to spend more than 120 quid on her present.

Have a rethink. You really can’t just give them a ticket to go alone as a gift. Sorry op.

An individual ticket to a show or concert is whilst thoughtful not really a great present. It's the sort of thing you want to share with someone so unfortunately I would be looking for an alternative present.

I would say it’s poor etiquette to gift someone a singular ticket (unless you’ve also purchased one for yourself and plan to go to the event with the person). You need to re-think your gift.

Do they like theatre? Matinees at the old Vic and the Southbank are reduced for 60 year olds so you might be able to get two?
The abba thing is great though

Would you be able to ask her? Do you can check that the date suits her and whether she reslly would like to go her self. Quite a risky present if you pick the date and only provide one ticket…

bitten, I’m really not keen on surprises. Growing up, the ‘birthday girl’ got to pick and plan the treat, and usually pay. In those days, treats usually consisted of providing cake for tea. Do much easier to be gf person providing the treat and overcome course of the year m, the costs work out no different. And you get to control the budget and pick the treat. Win:win.

MatildaTheCat · 30/03/2025 17:35

No, it wouldn’t be fun alone so another ticket needs to be bought which isn’t ideal for the birthday person.

If she’s in London how about tickets for one of the many great exhibitions on? V&A are about to open their Cartier show, the Lightbox in Kings Cross is reopening their David Hockney show. So much to choose from and a treat for two.

Thank you all for your honesty and the great suggestions. She loves V and A museum so that's a good one for sure to consider. I wish I could afford 2 tickets but I just can't. I was planning to get her a voucher btw so she could choose the date. She loves surprises so I'm not worried about this bit. :) last year a gave her 2 tickets for the Tina show and she loved it.

What about buying her tickets for Mamma Mia the Musical if she likes Abba? You could get two for £100.

whistlesandbells · 30/03/2025 20:09

You can’t buy 1 ticket. Pick something within budget for 2. A gallery or exhibition.

or what about a beautiful book and thoughtful card. Something silk or cashmere? A lovely pen? A bottle of quality wine?
