To wish kids outside will stop screaming

jbf19 · 29/03/2025 17:20

There are about 6 kids playing on the street (cul de sac) aged 4-12 (complete guess) screaming as they do so. It is doing my head in. Plus one of the has discovered that the metal gate to their home has a nice (in the eyes of a 6 year old) thwack when they close it. So do it on repeat.

Actually what age should kids stop screaming when playing?

Any tactics how to reduce the kids from screaming and constant banging on the metal gate? I have no idea where they live - as there is an alley way at the bottom of the cul de sac which connects to another cul de sac.

I would poss ask the parents to stop the gate malarkey

Overtheatlantic · 29/03/2025 17:37

They’re just practicing for those warm summer evenings.

EmeraldRoulette · 29/03/2025 17:44

I don't know but I feel for you

I really wish I could ask the parents here for a schedule

In theory, I could I guess! I try to be out on sunny weekends. It's sad.

however, two people have shouted at them to shut up and I think the parents have taken it on board - hopefully - as they are dividing some of their time and going to the next road we think. It's toy guns, noisy toys, kicking footballs around parked cars, and they've discovered how to make maximum noise going over certain brick sections on all kinds of weird contraptions and they really enjoy it.

I was chatting with a neighbour and she was saying it's amazing how much noise comes from one family. I thought it was two families, there's fecking 5 kids! I have seen the mum put all 5 of them in the car to make them calm down so maybe it is one family.

there's a big green space 10 mins away. Why they don't go there, I presume it's so the parents can keep an eye from the window of their flat.

offmynut · 29/03/2025 18:03

I doont mind kids playing they all make noise BUT i get what you are saying op with the screaming part there is no need for it.
Last summer holidays it was bloody awful we kids that was screaming and shouting none stop from 7 am till 10pm.
And if i see the parents they just stand there laughing thinking its funny.
The other morning school run mums i did shout at 2 mums and their kids and ask if they wanted any duck tape for their mouths.
They walked away in a huff.
This year im grabbing my passport and leaving for the six weeks holiday.

My kids are always made to come in immediately if they scream. And any playdate screamers aren’t invited back.

StressyMcStressFace · 29/03/2025 18:05

Would you prefer it if they were indoors playing on computers?

If they were shrieking and screaming outside my house all day? Hmmm, let's have a think 🤔

No but would prefer it if parents parented their children not to scream and squeal blood murder for no reason.

Someone ALWAYS says this as if there are only 2 options: scream head off or play on computer.

Yes, because that's definitely the only alternative.

Parent your children responsibly. Tell them that screaming isn't acceptable.

Mine were too.

I would have to go out and tell them to stop screaming - Oi you lot, stop screaming or I'll tell your mum - type thing. Kids usually respect an adult telling them in my experience, unless you have rough neighbours/families.

Love to see and hear kids playing but no need for screams

I used to think posters were ott with this kind of comment until I visited a friend who had shrieking children playing outside constantly. I have 3 DDs and they can be loud but nothing like the shrieking. I think I would have resorted to crime in the hope prison was more peaceful.

shellyleppard · 29/03/2025 18:10

When my two sons were younger and playing outside too much screaming and they were in. No TV or computer games either. I feel for you op, kids screaming do my head in.

I think people who write this are the parents

Mouthfulofquiz · 29/03/2025 18:12

I love children playing outside but I won’t allow mine to scream. And if arguing starts to get loud then I get them in. My neighbours don’t need or deserve to hear it. If they are playing and having fun without purposefully ruining other people’s fun then they can stay out.

altaego · 29/03/2025 18:13

nothing... they are children, they are playing, the weather is nice and school is finished for a few weeks. let them enjoy being children

Its not the playing kids noise we are on about thats normal to hear kids playing.
Not the oh sounds like their having fun good for them enjoying time off school etc no not that.
Its more of the constant screaming shouting squealing the noise that makes your ears bleed and there is really no need for it.

StressyMcStressFace · 29/03/2025 18:22

Kids screaming is a part of normal child development. They are expressing joy/excitement/ frustration or simply just letting off steam. Yes it can be loud and yes it can be annoying but I've never met a child who does not ever scream when having fun outside. I'd be very worried about a child scared to express themselves in the most natural way they know.

Quite frankly yes, although I don't see why there are only two options. Screaming like bloody banshees condemned to eternal hell or shut in a dark bedroom. I once screamed my head off as a child playing in the garden. My Dad came out and told me calmly but firmly that screaming was reserved for people in great distress. If I screamed without good cause then nobody would take me seriously if I ever needed help. Just like the boy who cried wolf. It was a good lesson.

Doseofreality · 29/03/2025 18:28

I put a post on here last week about next door’s children screaming at full volume whilst playing. I now taken to knocking or shouting over the fence “Is everything ok? Are you hurt? Are you being murdered? Should I call 999?”.

I think their Mum may have got the message now!

it'll be dark soon and they will be going in for bed.. the novelty of it all will wear off soon and you can go back to your quiet life.

Nope, they are best to be outside, but not screaming. It’s not one or the other.

It’s dark outside and still kids are screaming.

Someone needs to create a remote that when pressed shuts the kid up
