I want to try mounjaro

There I've said it. It doesn't seem fair that I can't and just have to work and still stay a little bit fat but others are allowed to use it down to a much lower BMI than me. I'm BMI of around 25.5 / 26 so overweight but not THAT big. But I have constant food noise that I really want to switch off. I eat way more than I should and I can't seem to stop. The only way I've been managing to keep my BMI at the level it's at right now is by exercising ALL THE TIME. I walk 3 miles every morning before the kids get up, do push ups and squats and sit ups the minute I get out of bed in the morning and go to the gym 5 times a week. It's exhausting. I have PCOS and insulin resistance which I think might be the cause of my constant hunger tbh.
Meanwhile my cousin started with a BMI of about 28 so got prescribed mounjaro, she is now MUCH slimmer than me with - she says herself - pretty much no effort. And she's allowed to stay on it till her BMI is down to 22, then she'll switch to a maintenance dose to keep her there.
Why can't I use it? I don't really understand the logic. I actually have been thinking of stopping the exercise for a month or two to push me over the 27 BMI (I have high cholesterol so would qualify at 27) just to make my life easier. Is that nuts?

I slightly fudged my stats when I started MJ last August. Told the pharmacy I was an inch shorter and 11bs heavier than I really was. This took my BMI from 28.6 up to the magic 30.

I lost weight slowly but steadily. My chronic sweet tooth and carb cravings disappeared. I was happy to eat less and more healthily, with lots of lean protein, fruit and veg. My junk food obsession just ......gone. I had barely any side effects. Certainly the side effects of being overweight (aching joints, swollen fingers, palpitations, rising cholesterol) were much worse.

It took me 5 months to lose 3 stones which is just under 25% of my total body weight. I went from a portly size 14 to a slender size 8/10. I look and feel so much better.

My BMI is now 22.4 and I've been on a lower maintenance dose for 6 weeks now. I have researched the benefits and protection that MJ provides against dementia, heart disease and strokes (all three are rife in my family) and have decided I will likely stay on MJ long term. Yes, it costs me £160 per month but I would happily pay twice that because of it's many health benefits. And when the patent expires in a few years the cost will drop dramatically.

Yeah see it's cases like yours (thanks for sharing btw, absolutely not having a dig at you) that makes me think there's no real logic. My BMI is around 26 but I have insulin resistant PCOS and high cholesterol (familial apparently) also high risk of slipping back into active alcohol addiction - which my mother died of but for which I'm currently in recovery. I've heard from multiple sources it takes the urge to drink away too.
And you are maintaining at 22. Sounds bloody brilliant to me.
Ugh maybe I should just cut out the exercise for a bit. It will definitely swing me over the threshold.

Try taking berberine instead?

Shwish · 02/04/2025 18:48

Does that have a similar mechanism? Likely to work on urges? Will have a research. Thank you

OP have a listen to Dr Stacy Sims interview on Mel Robbins podcast, came out a few days ago. She's brilliant at explaining how to use food and exercise for weight loss. You may find that you are actually exercising too much and not eating enough, crazy as it sounds!

Definitely worth a listen and see if there is anything helpful there. Honestly if you can do it without meds you'll be better off. And if you find you do still want the meds after trying Stacy Sims' method, then at least you won't have done any harm to yourself. Really it won't be long until these and better drugs are available to you, safely and legally.

YouFetidMoppet · 02/04/2025 19:16

Moujaro worked for me and I did maintain for months until I had to take anti depressants and even then I still didn't gain much back.

There is a lady on YouTube who is over 40,used to do lots of cardio and swears by weight lifting now. Apparently lots of cardio increases cortisol and hunger in women over 40 and we should do less high impact exercise and more strength training. Are you doing weights at the gym, or more cardio?

Low carb is probably the way to go, but it is hard when they are so cheap and convenient.

I suspect a private doctor would prescribe for you as they most definitely do for similar others especially given the context. They would do full bloods & checks.

You're welcome. I took Tamoxifen for nearly 3 years (couldn't do the full 5 years because of side effects) and I'm pretty sure it messed up my metabolism quite a lot. And it's known to potentially damage your heart etc. I see taking Mounjaro as correcting the damage that Tamoxifen did.

Interestingly, when I saw my breast surgeon a couple of weeks ago she commented on my weight loss and it transpires she's also on MJ and uses the same online pharmacy!

I'm listening now - this is fascinating and I'm definitely going to try to make those changes. Thank you!

Shwish · 03/04/2025 14:00

I will try and listen to this later as well. Thank you. I might be exercising too much I guess. I'm definitely eating (more than) enough though! It's the eating that's the problem for me.
Thanks to the PP that suggested berberine too. Have ordered some to give it a go

I lied to get it as I have about 2 stone to lose. Wanted to get it off and then maintain. I did my first injection on Thursday morning and today I am in bed with awful tummy pain and diarrhoea. I also randomly got a rash on my forearms yesterday. I doubt I’ll do another as I cannot have a day off from life with this. My own fault but I went into it wirh the hope of quickly shedding some weight and then keeping it off. Not sure if these side effects are just because my body isn’t used to it or because my body can tolerate. But not sure I’ll test again to find out.

FateReset · 05/04/2025 17:48

It's not the easy fix it sounds. You'll lose the weight then struggle to keep it off without proper aftercare and GP guidance. And risk your health too.

Exercise makes little difference until you reduce the calories dramatically. And that determination has to come from you. You're still hiding behind lots of excuses for not losing it, instead of tackling your behaviour. Take responsibility first, instead of thinking this is the only option for you, or it will become another reason to avoid losing weight the natural, healthy way (through a calorie controlled diet, with therapy if you're unable to stick to it. The change has to be sustainable and permanent, not a quick-fix).

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/04/2025 18:18

Sorry with a bmi of 25.5/26 you do not need mj

you need to diet /eat less /calorie count for a few weeks /month or so

25 and over is overweight

you are barely overweight

Lolly2803 · 05/04/2025 18:45

I’m really struggling with the side effects of my first dose. I can hardly move with tummy aches and I’ve been on the loo all day. I will never take it again. When will this stop?

Spek to your provider and they may be able to recommend treatments to help with the side effects but otherwise it takes about 8-72 hours to build up to full release and has a half life of 5 days so 5 days after peak effect it will be at about half the effect.

Erm I don't think I've been making ANY excuses. I've openly admitted I eat to much. That's my problem and I 100% know it. Saying I have insulin resistance and high cholesterol werent excuses as to why I'm fat! They were reasons I think I should be allowed to take it at BMI 26 (because at BMi 27 they would be)
I KNOW I need to stick to a calorie controlled diet. Problem is I can't!

From reading this thread it seems quite common to ‘work the system’ in order to get the drug, be it via the NHS or going private, so go for it OP.

If you can’t beat them, join them.
It seems there’s nothing wrong with cheating the system if it is an unfair system to begin with.

Stop the exercising for a few weeks and then head to the GP.

It should settle soon if you watch what you eat - what you’d eaten in the day before having the injection will probably make a difference too. Some foods seem very hard to tolerate on it, the fatty or overly rich ones mainly.

I was fine for weeks and quite careful to avoid very fatty foods but then had a bacon sandwich one day (with streaky bacon with the fat on) and that took me out for days! I have heard that roast potatoes can have the same effect but I didn’t have any so don’t know that for certain.

So, if you drink lots and lots of water and eat a little bit when you feel ready, of the bland banana/rice/crackers type food groups then hopefully you will feel much better.

Don't head to the GP. They won't prescribe it to you. Only a tiny percentage get it on the NHS and that's after going through all the other prescribed services first.
