Seriously thinking about leaving the UK - AIBU?

HonoraBridge · 28/03/2025 16:31

I love the UK in many ways but it has been going downhill for at least 20 years and it feels as if the speed of the decline is accelerating. I no longer see a happy, or particularly safe, future here. For the first time in my life, I am very seriously thinking about leaving the UK and that feeling gets stronger day by day. When I mention this to friends, many are feeling the same way. YANBU - you are right to think seriously about leaving the UK. YABU - the UK is a still a great country to live in and you are being unreasonable to want to leave.

Where do you live and work? I’ve lived in various parts of the UK for over 50 years and never had to talk about the Royal Family, or discuss curtseying. You are therefore being pretty offensive to paint your experience as some kind of norm.

I didnt say that I discussed curtseying did I. I said that a lot of people in the UK talk about the royal family. What kate is wearing, the children's birthday.s

What about what i wrote about the magazines?

The royal family are plastered across the front of all of the UK magazines.

King charles and camilla were recently the number one story on the dailymail.

Now the top story on the dailymail is about Prince Harry.

There is a lot of talk about the royal family in England

So what? Nobody is obliged to buy magazines or talk about it. Is the US “old fashioned” because they have magazines devoted to obsessing about celebrities and what wealthy, famous people are wearing and doing? Does everyone in the US do nothing but talk about famous people and their lives?

I don't like the isolation in the UK. I also don't like how rude and unfriendly many people are in England, compared to other countries

I also don't like how old fashioned England is. Other countries are much more modernised.

I remember meghan markle said that she was shocked when she had to curtsey to the queen. She said meeting the queen was like going to a themed restaurant in America, where actors pretend to put on a medieval banquet.

I am using that analogy, because to a lot of people in England, curtseying to the royal family is seen as normal, but to many other countries it is seen as extremely old-fashioned.

I feel like that about a lot of different aspects of English life. How old fashioned it all is.

Whereabouts are you? I don’t recognise this take as something that happens

Which part , the isolation, or the old fashionedness?

Jesus, some people get so butt hurt if you criticise England in any way.

The things that I have criticised England for are extremely mild. There is a lot worse that I don't like about England, that I could written

Try to find a criticism that doesn’t make you sound like you don’t live here… There is plenty I don’t like about the place, but your criticism just comes across as the fantasies of someone who knows sweet fa. I could just as well say I once spent two weeks in the butt end of nowhere in a country and have now concluded I know enough about the entire country to make a criticism that fits a 50-year old stereotype of the place that was trotted out in schoolbooks in my country of birth.

Strange post.

I do live in the U.K . I am looking out my window, it is still hot now at 7.20 in the south of England.

There are things that I like about the UK too of course.
I like The nature, the beautiful parks, if I get a train to london there is a lot to see there. There are good jobs and in my opinion, good healthcare. I think some of you don't realise how good you have it with the nhs. Healthcare is much more expensive in so many other countries.

However, I cant get used to the feeling of isolation in the UK, after living in mainland europe, so next year i will go back

This is an island - of course it is therefore isolated from other countries. I find when I’ve been away and then come back, everything feels somewhat claustrophobic - narrow, overcrowded roads; too much litter; almost nowhere far enough away from roads, air traffic or houses to be completely quiet and isolated (despite the other type of isolation); too much inequality and simmering discontent. I also dislike the British press - less aimed at reporting news and more spouting politically partisan bile of one type or another. What I love about it is that every country has its good and bad points, but at least I have a genuine understanding of how systems work here, and have friends, family and support networks. I think it is also a naturally physically beautiful country, with an interesting history, and I love my local community. The natural environment isn’t being adequately cared for, which is sad, but it’s a country I love enough not to want to desert.

Agree. My eldest two kids were born in NZ and I'm hoping they may be able to somehow be able to go there or Australia.

Presumably they can get New Zealand passports which will allow them to go to either country.

Thanks this is something I need to look into. I'm not sure whether they can automatically get NZ passports just by being born there. We returned to the Uk were they were 2.5yrs and eight months old. The eldest did have an NZ passport, ds2 didn't as we were coming back to the Uk.

Here is a photo I took of a magazine the other day because I like the subject on the cover. Is it one of the Royal Family? Asking for a friend
