People parking on edge of dropped kerbs

AIBU to think people like this are inconsiderate and lazy?!

I live in a cul-de-sac and generally park my car on the drive. There’s always people (normally NDN’s family) who park outside my house (no issues there) but park in a way that makes it very difficult for me to exit my driveway. It’s because they park right up to the edge of the dropped kerb, which means I’m unable to swing around their car without hitting the pavement on the other side as the road is quite narrow.

I end up having to do a 6 point turn to get out or drive out the other way and come back. They could park slightly further away, in the middle, but won’t because they would have to walk further to get to their destination so would rather inconvenience me instead.

Perfectly legal of course, but shit for people like me that have to put up with it.

@takealettermsjones just to confirm, I always reverse onto my driveway and pull out when leaving. My drive is actually quite steep and it’s difficult to reverse off.

Understood, I wasn't saying you're doing it 😃

See if you can apply to the council for a H-bar to be painted on the road across your driveway entrance, it would extend past the dropped curb and deter drivers from parking too close.
Not enforceable I think but seems quite effective around here.

Yes, it's so sad that my mobility scooter has a sticky out bit that sometimes connects with peoples cars when they are on the pavement/ across dropped kerbs.

How do you find negotiating it all, with a mobility scooter? I see so bloody many cars blocking the pavements nowadays I'm wondering how wheelchair and mobility scooter users manage to go about their daily business at all!

I think you're in a bit of a glass house there to be honest because you shouldn't really be reversing out 😂

While this is true, I assume the cars would also make it hard to reverse in too.

That's very true 😁

Say what? Reversing out of our drive into a quiet cul de sac? It's not illegal. Have a word.

I didn't say it was illegal!

I don't get your point then, along with the laughing face. It's a quiet cul de sac, not the M25.

I explained my point in a subsequent post, but happy to copy for convenience:

It's not silly, it's a fair comparison. This thread comes down to whose convenience trumps whose, given that the parkers are not breaking the law or contravening the highway code (at least, that was my understanding from the OP, but happy to be corrected if they are). But people who reverse out of their drive onto a road are choosing the more dangerous option for their own convenience. I'm not pearl clutching about that - go for it if you think it's safe - I'm just saying it's a bit rich to moan about people choosing their own convenience over yours if in fact you're doing something that puts your own convenience over other people's safety.

With great difficulty to be honest. But I did have a few momemnts of levity after politiely asking a local organisation for SIX MONTHS to stop parking on pavements and dropped kerbs. The local council were actually very kind and sent out some traffic wardens. I bet they were all very pissed off when they got out of church that Sunday! That said, it only happened svereal weeks ago, and on Sunday last we were back to them doing what the hell they wanted, so I may be treating the traffic wardens to coffee again soon.

They are not always actively choosing that option - what about driveways that if you reversed into, would mean that you couldnt open the door due a to wall or hedge or some other obstacle.

That is exactly the case at my home. I would not be able to get the door open if I reversed in, due to a narrow driveway with a fence (not mine) down one side.

StripyHorse · 28/03/2025 17:56

You have my sympathy OP. We live in a cul de sac too and when cars park opposite (which is all the time) and in front of our house it is very difficult to get into the drive.

Is it possible for you to drive out the other way (presumably towards the end of the cul de sac) and turn round there? This is what we often have to do before reversing into our driveway because of parked cars. We only have cars parked against the dropped curb on one side because the other side is NDN driveway.

JackGrealishsCalves · 28/03/2025 18:04

I experience similar but I live on a main road.
My main problem is NDN grandson parks over their driveway but as their drive is next to mine , when I come home I have to drive onto my drive as it's impossible to reverse on without stopping traffic in both directions. Usually I would stop on their drop kerb and reverse back onto my drive.
Infuriating esp as he has ample room to park further back as no one else ever parks there, we all have drives.

Newbie8918 · 28/03/2025 18:18

We have this too, as well as parking directly facing the drive on a narrow road. Facing isn’t a massive issue when it’s a normal car but it tends to be a transit van that parks there. Combine parking at the edge of the dropped kerb with the van facing, means we can’t get on or off, no matter how good a driver you are. Whoever parked last looked and though f**k it as no one with a ounce of sense would think a car can get in but as neither are breaking the law, they’ve just lashed it in the space!
DH spoke to the transit van owner who (as a PP suggested) went off on a polite rant about other neighbours moaning about him blocking light into their windows when he parks further down! This was his solution as it’s against a wall and not a window. It’s there as we speak so the light losers obviously won this one with him 🤣
