To wonder if anyone has ever left a new role with one week’s notice during their probation period?

I’m considering leaving my new job and according to the probation period’s terms, I only need to give one week’s notice. But I feel conflicted - has anyone else done this? Is it a common thing or does it come across as unprofessional? I’m just not feeling it but I don’t want to burn bridges if I do decide to leave after such a short time.

I always think the job is on probation too.

If you don't often change jobs like this I wouldn't see the harm in it, just be polite and professional when you leave.

Passthecake30 · 27/03/2025 22:26

I have, I was offered a job much closer to home. I was really apologetic but the boss didn’t say much, said he understood. They did give me a good luck card that made me feel really guilty!

Passthecake30 · 27/03/2025 22:26

I do think you’d burn bridges however

Zoraflora · 27/03/2025 22:27

How long are you in the role?
If you are certain its not for you then you are better off leaving while you can still give a weeks notice.

DramaLlamaLana · 27/03/2025 22:27

Depends how long you’ve been there. If you’re embedded in projects it would be nice to offer a few weeks more so you can complete projects or hand them over. If this isn’t the case and it won’t affect any other team members then just be polite and professional and thank them for the opportunity (even if you don’t mean it).

Almost 20 years ago I did. I had another job lined up so had a bit of stress getting contracts etc sorted quickly but it was absolutely the right decision.

If it's not right find something else.

Latenightreader · 27/03/2025 22:31

Not me but I worked somewhere where someone decided on their second day the job wasn't for them. They were a bit shocked that they had to work the weeks notice and I think did the minimum for two further days then didn't show up again. No idea what happened after that! They were about 17 and it was a lot of years ago.

RaininSummer · 27/03/2025 22:32

Depends on whether you have another job lined up I think. If so then definitely leave. I left a job after two weeks once as the job I really wanted was offered.

Daisyrainbows · 27/03/2025 22:33

Yes I had a job and I knew on day 2 it was a huge mistake. They had stripped all the good bits out of it and given to various other teams. It was dull and awful. So basic it was insulting. I had no responsibility or respect. Even though I was paid £7k more than the exact old role I did elsewhere. I hated it.
i saw a job I wanted about a week after and 2 weeks later I was offered it. I told my current workplace and they were v angry. I was walked out of the office within an hour. I was so happy to be free!!!!

Yes I definitely burned bridges but it was the right choice

I left a job with no notice after 2 months. The MD was a sadistic cunt that I’d have stepped over if he’d collapsed from a stroke.

sunshineandshowers40 · 27/03/2025 22:38

I think if you were at your previous role/s for at least a couple of years it is probably ok. What's the issue with your current job?

MrsPinkCock · 27/03/2025 22:51

Yep. I resigned just before the end of my probationary period as the thought of having to give three months notice after that point almost finished me off.

I left, it was a great decision, and didn’t impact my future career at all. (6 years and 2 jobs later, anyway, with a couple of other offers in between)

DoComeToMeKitty · 27/03/2025 22:59

Yes, years ago. On the 2nd week in, I had full-on flu and had 3 days off, was really unwell. As soon as i returned, my manager basically told me off for taking time off. I left pretty soon after this.

Notmyrealname22 · 27/03/2025 23:09

I once had a man join my team, go out to lunch on the first day and never return. 🤣

it was hilarious! The manager was awful, and this guy picked up on that in the first 3 hours on the job. My team were equal parts impressed and wondering why we were not quite so quick on the uptake as him. In fairness, I knew within the first couple of weeks the manager was awful, but wasn’t smart enough to leave.

HS1990 · 27/03/2025 23:10

Hello same boat as you. Boss made me really upset today and extended probation. What is your reason for wanting to go?

Justsaywhatyoumean123 · 27/03/2025 23:16

I think probation works both ways and somebody told me the word 'employ' means to use. After that I went self employed.

TheHonestGreenUser · 27/03/2025 23:16

Yep me, twice. Once 2 weeks after i started so didn't even finish the probation.told them I knew it wasn't the job for me.and there was no.point wasting everyone's time. The 2nd was at the end of the probationary period. Gave them my reasons
Both times both understanding and appreciated my honesty
Now I ama manager I know it was the right thing to do.for both sides. Don't waste sometimes time training you to just leave.
