I ordered this dress from Nobody's Child. I am a size 12, and (I thought) relatively normally proportioned. But the underbust seam goes across my nipples, and it's 3 inches too big at the waist/next seam down. I can sew pretty well, so I'm going to try and make one that actually fits, but I can't find any patterns with this waist panel design. I've searched tea dress, but that doesn't bring any up.
Any ideas what this construction is called (the diamond-y panel from under bust to waist)? Bonus points if you can find me a sewing pattern for it...

That would help, wouldn't it...

I would say it’s a tea dress

MarkingBad · 26/03/2025 19:22

I agree it's an empire line dress.

whatnoooow · 26/03/2025 19:24

Tea dress

lucindalucinsa · 26/03/2025 19:24

Empire line

RitaIncognita · 26/03/2025 19:28

Another vote for empire, although it's a somewhat modified version as it dips down almost to the natural waist on the sides (which makes it more flattering than pure empire in my opinion). That McCall's pattern seems pretty close to me.

tea dress

Exactfare · 26/03/2025 19:31

Style arc belle is the pattern you want 😁

mewkins · 26/03/2025 19:36

The Style Arc Belle woven dress is similar.... you can probably put som extra volume in the skirt.

I don’t know what it’s called, but I like it. 😄

Thighdentitycrisis · 26/03/2025 19:48

That’s not what I know as Empire line. .
Empire line is loose from the “Line” which sits just below the bust. I would call that a fitted bodice which is the opposite.
But maybe the names have changed

Pigletpoglet · 26/03/2025 19:50

It's definitely not pure empire line - it's shaped under the bust, then it has another 'waist' seam (kind of at the natural waist).
But the Style Arc Belle pattern looks really good! Off to order...

Maybe search milkmaid style dresses

Feefifothumb · 26/03/2025 19:56

The name of that style @Pigletpoglet is 'empire waist' which is different to an 'empire line' dress style as in the picture provided by @Thighdentitycrisis .

lovelydayIhave · 26/03/2025 19:59

Fit and flare dress.

Pumpkincozynights · 26/03/2025 20:01

I have no idea what it’s called but the dress looks really nice. Love the colour too.

northernballer · 26/03/2025 20:34

I ordered that dress and it was absolutely massive, so much material!

midtownmum · 26/03/2025 21:17

Deer and doe orchidee is also similar. I find dresses like that never fit me, my bust point is low compared to shop bought stuff. It's a big part of why I learned to sew.

Cheesypumpkin · 26/03/2025 21:27

I bought this pattern off Etsy which is similar

I arrived to say Style Arc Belle or Deer and Doe Orchidee.

If you aren't familiar with Style Arc patterns be aware that the instructions are very very limited and assume that you are mostly capable of putting the garment together without them.

I get my Style Arc patterns printed at CLC Essex if you go down the PDF route rather than a pre printed pattern.

I have the Orchidee pattern but only ever sewn a bodice toile so far - the sizing doesn't go up very far but it's otherwise a nice pattern and fits well around the bust.
