Foreword I know it's a blunt tool, etc, etc ,etc... and I DO exercise more than the average person (don't really ift heavy) but I've always thought my clothes size doesn't match my weight.

Anywho according to the Navy Body Fat formula I'm around 27-28%

A BMI extrapolation would put me at 38%. By reversing that calculation someone with my BF% is around 15kg lighter than my current weight.

Anyway just a public service announcement :)

You already told me this?

You keep going on about the same thing! BMI is not a % to start with (well it might in principle) but they're considered "linear units"

I menstruate regularly and grew and birthed my child. I’m healthy.

I lost my fertility at 17% it took me a year to recover it.

My bmi has just hit 24.9 (from 43). I have discovered that bmi isn't brilliant for me. Or at least I don't think so. I'm 5ft 2, 9st 11 and a size 8 (with my top half being a size 6 sometimes). I've decided not to drop lower because I don't know where the hell I'd get clothes from. Hardly any physical shops stock a 6. And I lost weight to begin with because buying a size 20 in shops was difficult! I don't want a repeat but at the other end of the scale
I would think most people would not look at my bmi and think at 25 they'd be a size 8. Imagine if I got to the lower end. I'd never find anything smaller than a 4-6 which I most certainly would be below at 7st 3. So yeah, I don't think I fit in to the category (I weight lift also, but I also remember being 9st 6 at 16 and was wearing a 6-8 then 24 years ago, so it isn't vanity sizing or muscle mass or any other reason - I just appear to fit smaller sizes at the top end of the bmi).
My measurements for anyone doubting, bust 35in, under bust 28in, waist 25.5in, hips 34in.

These sorts of posts blow my mind. I just can’t get my head around someone who weights nearly 10 stone saying they are also so tiny that shops won’t stock clothes tiny enough for them. That 10 stone is on your body, right?!? It’s dictating your body size.
How can you have 10 stones of weight and yet be so tiny you need a size 6 and don’t want to lose anymore in case all clothes sold in uk shops are too big for you.

TBF I'm also a size 6 at 10st (which in all honesty is my best look).

I've only reached those lower weights by exercise (8+ hours a week), so I really don't know what size I would be at that weight with no exercise.

I'm 9 stone, 5'2 and a size 6 in some shops. I'm not a true size 6, more an 8-10. I know PP said it isn't vanity sizing, but it is. It can make it difficult to find clothes that fit (but I would never use that as a reason not to lose more weight when at upper end of healthy BMI, shop somewhere else or get clothes altered).

No, I don't. I was referring to bmi, not body fat percentage when you quoted me again, rather obviously as I mentioned 27% bmi in my post, not 27% body fat.

BMI isn't quoted in percentages, that's why you're confusing people.

Well to avoid confusion don't add the % as BMI is just a number NOT a percentage

It's really general. If I were lower end of the healthy weight range for BMI I'd be honestly skeletal. I got to the top end of the healthy range for my wedding and people were genuinely concerned about me. I was in a UK size 8 wedding dress.. and this was me within a few lbs of overweight according to BMI.

I am currently obese according to BMI and am on mounjaro trying to lose weight but my goal weight is in the overweight category. I look and feel best in the middle of the overweight category. Have energy, am a size 10-12.
Even though I know i need to lose weight from where I am you probably wouldn't realise how high my BMI was from looking at me.

I have a friend who was classed as obese and she's a UK size 12 I'm not joking.. it's ridiculous if you saw her. No way she's actually obese.

So I think it's just a rough guide.

But how? Where is your 10 stone if not dictating the size of your body? Weight is weight, it can’t just disappear.

being short surely just means clothes are too long for your shorter body, it doesn’t mean somehow weight ……. Isn’t there.

It really depends on your body shape and muscle mass.
If you are naturally more muscular and are a pear shape you'll be able to wear much smaller clothing than someone with a different body shape.
I wore a size 8 wedding dress (and they come up notoriously small) when I was just under 11 stone. I'm not joking. I lost weight to get in it so I knew my exact weight. And I was generally a size 8 at that time. A true size 8.
So I can see someone being a size 6 at 10 stone definitely

It's density pure and simple, muscle is denser than fat.

That's why 1kg of say gold would take a lot less space than water (which would be exactly one liter of water)

Well, judge for yourself. I'm wearing size 8 jeans and size 6 top in this. It took me 9lb loss to go from a 10 to an 8. The smaller I've got, the quicker to drop a dress size also. At an 18 it was 2.5st before I dropped to a 16. I weightlift 3x a week BTW.

But would you weigh so much? I totally understand being smaller, muscular and pear shaped being a size 6 and maybe 8/9 stone, whereas at 8/9 stone I’d be a 10.

I totally understand there are margins around this. But an extra say 1 or 2 stone is a massive amount of weight.

10 stone is a lot for a woman to weigh. we’re not talking a few pounds here and there, which accounts for the difference between muscle and fat.

Surely height matters an awful lot?
If you're 10 stone but only 4 foot 6, you're going to be a bigger clothes size than someone who's 10 stone but 6 foot tall.

Depends where you carrry it too. @ThisMustBeMyDream looks like she had fairly wide shoulders and larger boobs - in contrast I carry extra weight on my bum and thighs so at 10 stone need a size 12 in jeans (although the waist then gapes and has to be taken in by inches).

Unpaidviewer · 28/03/2025 11:44

The problem with using clothing sizes is that a 10 in one shop could be a 14 in the same shop (zara I'm talking about you!). I have a few vintage pieces and a current size 8 would be a 12 in stuff from the 60s.

Randomuser456 · 28/03/2025 11:46

I was a size 4-6 at that point (that skirt was a size 6) the jacket maybe a 4. I had already gained weight by then and I was slightly above 9st.

Why are you acting like 10 stone is huge? We are adult females and are meant to weigh something. Your recent posts sound like you might have body issues. You're also not acknowledging vanity sizing.

PP looks slimmer than me, despite weighing more at the same height.

Yes. The research shows that being underweight at 65 and over is associated with an increase in deaths due to any cause:

https://www.omnicalculator.com/health/geriatric-bmi

Wow!
If I was 70 I'd be underweight. Interesting, thanks for sharing that.

What still confuses me though, is the difference at younger ages. According to the navy formula a 35 year old should be heavier than a 25 year old, but I'm not convinced there's actually a health reason for that. (I appreciate there are reasons it is likely to be the case, but not that it needs to be, iyswim).

Don't know if BMI takes age into account at these younger ages.

There’s a massive variation in muscle between gladiator and couch potato. CrossFit is excellent for functional exercise and lifting weights, there’s certainly a few strong looking women at my local CrossFit and they certainly look different (less wobbly) next to my inactive friends. Cycling and running also gives muscular legs too. Runner/cyclist calf muscles can be quite pronounced. Clearly women can’t gain muscle at the rate men do, however with hard work women can gain different degrees of muscle.

Maybe the women you see at crossfit also lift weights. I've read that crossfit is actually more cardio and that everyone from middle age should be doing actual weight lifting.

10 stone isn’t a lot depending on height and muscle
i saw a video on Instagram yesterday of a woman that was a fitness person and she’s 85kg (13 stone something?)

vanity sizing isn’t else extreme that someone who should be a standard 10 is in a 6.

there is so much exaggeration on here- comparing the weight of gold and water, vanity sizing to go down 2 sizes.

10 is a lot when you claim you are one of the smallest people this country sells clothes for, yes

also the shorter you are and the more you weigh the bigger you will be and the bigger your BMi will be. Short people will naturally weigh less than average or tall people, not more
