If you’re son behaved like this as an adult

Our Son was a lovely boy with a lovely heart growing up, he had a good upbringing and was very respectful.
However since moving out he has changed and has become quite misogynistic and I have heard him quote things he’s read on social media, he’s following these manosphere type of posts.
I have tired to speak to him but he’s convinced I’m living in the dark ages and this is the way it is now because men have woken up.
I don’t really know how to proceed going forward as he’s 25 and living independently so I can’t really say or do anything.
I don’t know when he started to change but he’s got very strong views I don’t agree with and I have daughters I have brought up to be strong and confident and he’s just the sort of person I wouldn’t want anywhere near them.
I feel very uncomfortable with his attitude towards woman and I don’t know if there’s much we can do at this stage to steer him back or what’s drawn him to it in the first place.

I would tell him very firmly that his views are unacceptable. He's your son and you love him but that doesn't mean that you can't strongly disagree with him. Point out to him that he has sisters who are equal to him in every way. If he can't keep his vile views to himself, I would certainly be spending less time with him and telling him why.

Randomer27 · 26/03/2025 16:21

I wouldn’t accuse him, I think, but rather ask “you seem very angry, has something happened?” And just try to get to the bottom of it.

OiBonita · 26/03/2025 16:22

Absolutely agree with the first poster. You have to confront this and stay firm in your convictions.

Dont agree with what Randomer27 has said. So many women try to pander to men with these hateful beliefs and think if they sympathise then the man's perspective will change. It's not up to women to fix this hateful rhetoric. I've seen it so many times. Once men fall does this misogynistic rabbit hole they rarely change their minds.
If your son was spouting a load of disgusting racist rhetoric, what would your response be? We need to challenge misogyny as much as we do racism.

ShriekingTrespasser · 26/03/2025 16:34

I would take @Randomer27’s approach and engage with him. I might even agree with some of his points and then follow logic to challenge him. There’s no point in just challenging from the outset as you never engage with people in actual conversation that way and you hardly ever get them to change their minds.
A calm to and fro is better.

He has gone down a conspiracy theory rabbit hole. There's no point in confronting him or trying to have a rational discussion with him. It won't accomplish anything other than upsetting you. He's essentially brain washed. The best you can do is to state, in no uncertain terms, that those opinions aren't welcome in your house or at family gatherings and you won't be indulging further discussion.

For a partner yes, for a child no.

OP, these manosphere ideas are very frail and do no don’t hold any weight when put into practice. Challenge him if you wish but over the past 2 or so years, I’ve witnessed men going to the extreme with these beliefs, only to quickly realise this system is so commercialised and false. It’s great for the YouTubers I guess, as it pulls in viewers and has made them a ton of money. Does he have a partner? I’m assuming not. He’ll soon change his tune when his ‘red pill’ swag doesn’t attract as many ladies as he was promised 🙄
