Is this petty of me ? Teachers choosing the same favourite child for things..

I’ve noticed in my DS reception class, the same child has been chosen to speak up at different assemblies etc.

my DS told me he also wanted to do it, but wasn’t chosen again.

why do teachers always choose their favourite and don’t make things fair ? I remember this kind of thing happening when I was at school.

I haven’t mentioned it as it seems petty, but I also want my child to be given a chance !

how to best deal with this ?

Teachers don't "always" do that at all.

Are you sure DS wanted to do it and asked to do it?

At the last school I worked at we had a class assembly each half term where the children would present a pre-chosen topic and the parents were invited to watch. The children would be asked who would like a speaking role, who wanted to hold things up, who wanted to just sit there, etc. Usually around a dozen children would say they wanted a speaking part or an active role so then we'd start practicing, by the end of the first practice there would always be 4-5 who would decide that actually they don't want a speaking role after all. On the day of the assembly itself, another 1&2 would change their minds. It would then invariably end up as the same 2-4 children having speaking parts and everyone else being 'third sign-holder to the left' or 'bystander number four'.

We would also get at least 5-6 children whose parents would get in touch to say that Johnny wanted a speaking part and wasn't given one but Johnny hadn't told us he wanted one. When we would ask these children if they did (with a view to make changes so they could have one) they would say that no, they didn't actually want one.

Speak to the teacher at pick up and just say that your DS would quite like a speaking role in the assembly next time.

I have noticed this as well with some classes. Not all teachers do this. I have always thought that it may be to encourage some under confident children, for example they give stickers for younger children at dcs school. All dcs will get stickers at some points, however it was noticeable that one little girl came out with her cardigan absolutely covered in them. She had been struggling, crying on the way in etc, so they were building confident.
Could they be trying to encourage these children perhaps to take part? If they have agreed to it, and your son is already confident, maybe they've selected the other child? Or your ds hasn't put his hand up when asked. There may be reasons you're unaware of.
Could you have a word with the teacher before the next event, eg, "ds is really excited, and would love a speaking part, would it be possible..."

My eldest was always given the role of 'narrator' because he was a good reader. He didn't really want it, he would have preferred other parts! Teachers choose children for all sorts of reasons, some play favourites but it's not usual in my experience. Have a word with the teacher and let her know that your son has expressed an interest in having a speaking part in the assemblies. It might encourage her to give him a go next time!
