So someone just went into the back of me on a busy big roundabout ( 2 big A roads meeting / duel carriageways). She bumped into me as I was pulling put onto roundabout so I couldnt stop as I was on the roundabout once I realised what had happened. I have my baby with me in the car.
I carried up the duel carriageway by taking 2nd exit.
(First exit is a slip road to even bigger and busier dual carriage way. )
I went slowish and pulled over into the first lay by. ( if I had been by myself I prob would have pulled over onto verge just after round about but I thought about it and didn't feel it was safe to do that at rush hour with baby in car as there wasn't a propper hard shoulder.
I waited at layby but the other car didn't pull in and I didn't see it go by.
Very slow speed and just a mark in dirt on my bumper ( I know there can be damage underneath and car is going to garage next week anyway).
I know the law says I should report this to police but would you? I don't want to have declare it to my insurance my premium went up last time this happened 2 years ago in a similar incident.
I'm someone that always reports bumps in the past but in hind sight it's not always been the best thing todo! ( even if it the right and legal thing todo).
If the other car had stopped I would have asked them to settle outside of insurance if needed.

Tell both.

A similar thing happened to me. If the other guy claims (saying it's your fault) and you don't, you will have a lot of explaining to do.

Hatty65 · 24/03/2025 17:15

It sounds like there is no damage, and you don't have the registration number of the other drive, so reporting it to anyone is pointless.

That's what I think but then I think what if the other person reports it and they got my reg and they report it. Even though its their fault ... I would then be in bad for not reporting!

If reported to the police you will get a report number (or whatever it is called) and that goes to show your insurers that you believed the other party was at fault should any claim arise later on.

One thing I learnt while working in insurance was, when in doubt report everything.

Mareleine · 24/03/2025 17:25

I know you've explained why to us you didn't stop at the scene but she wasn't to know that. She probably thought you had some reason for driving off from the scene of the accident. How far away was this layby? With no other information (e.g. about the baby), as that driver I'd be wondering why you didn't just put your hazards on and stop at the scene like most people would. She didn't know you had your baby in the car. If I was her, I would have thought you'd driven off because you were uninsured and didn't want the hassle. So if I was her, I'd report it to my insurer but unless she has a dashcam she won't be able to identify who she hit. If I was you, I'd report it to the insurer to be on the safe side in case she does have a dashcam.

Sailawaygirl · 24/03/2025 17:38

I tired to signal that I was carrying on. But I think she was taking first exit. Although I didn't see her indicating.
I could of stopped on the round about but there was a crash last week at almost same place where ppl stopped due to a small bump and then they all got crashed into by a van! So I think I did the right thing safety wise.

not entirely sure why the other person would report that they had driven into the back of you - although when someone did it to me (she did stop, but tried to avoid insurance claim) she had the cheek to state she'd driven into the back of me because she'd decided the roundabout was clear.

But doesn’t that make your premiums go up

Went to report stuff stolen from my car but checked first and after the excess I would get very little and that amount plus much much more would be added to my premiums the next year

Insurance is really only to be used for big things that happen. If you try to make a claim or report an accident that isn’t your fault, insurance companies just rub their hands together with glee anticipating next years premium

Aaron95 · 23/07/2025 20:58

If there is any damage report to the police and your insurance. The police won't investigate as there is no chance of finding who did it but you need a crime number to give to your insurance company.

If there is no damage to the car there is no point reporting it. It will only be a waste of your time.

Sailawaygirl · 27/07/2025 19:12

So as an update. I did the 'right thing ' and told insurance that I had been in a no damage bump. Even the lady on the phone was surprised that I called it in!! And sort of hinted that yes you are ment to but no one does. So it did make my premium go up and even more embarrassing ( for) I have to tell my dad so I can go on his insurance to help him to dive a long distance.
Next time I won't do anything

Why are your premiums going up? Someone went in to the back of me as we approached a roundabout, he was only going at about ten miles an hour. There was a very slight mark that would probably not have shown if my car was a light colour but when it went to the garage the bumper was cracked internally and the whole thing had to be replaced.

My insurance wasn’t affected at all.

watchingplanesicantafford · 27/07/2025 21:09

I'm confused about why it affected your premium too.

roseymoira · 27/07/2025 21:28

The advice on Mumsnet is always to report everything, which is at odds with what happens in the real world as it increases your premiums whether you are at fault or not

It shouldn't but it does, I got rear ended, was stationary at the time, 100% not my fault and my premium still won't up..... bloody frustrating!

Kimmeridge · 27/07/2025 21:36

Have you checked your premium with other companies. My insurance renewal shot up this year but it was just the renewal price. I got it significantly cheaper with another company

If you don’t pay extra for protected no claims then your premiums go up if insurance companies are told you have had any sort of incident
