Dad needs colonoscopy

My dad, 75, did a routine poo sample after one of those test things arrived in the post and now has an emergency colonoscopy booked. Am I right to assume the worst?

No. Likely to be polyps they’ll remove. Chances are good. Do go with him so he can have sedation. Unpleasant without. Absolutely fine with sedation.

It could be anything. Df had blood in his stool, and they found that he had some cancer cells. They offered him an operation to remove part of the bowel, but there was a risk of a bag which df didn't want under any circumstance. It wasn't worth going through it because it was so slow growing. They just kept an eye on it. He ended up dying at 72 recently, completely unrelated issue.
Please try not to worry, op, until you know more.

No. It's a routine test just like an X-ray.

I have one every two years. It's no biggie in itself.

Thanks everyone

I was told the tests are so sensitive that if you brushed too hard with your toothbrush and bleed just a little, the tests can pick it up. Other than that, there are small benign polys and good ol' piles way before anything really nasty.

Honestly it will be fine the biggest issue is the damn diet and laxatives before the procedure.

Agree completely.

The preparation is awful, but the procedure itself is a piece of cake, even without sedation. I just used gas and air a bit and was back to normal by the time I was out of the department.
