Hope this is OK?

Reading discussions about how much tax we pay versus the poor value for money in services they buy has prompted me to post.

I stumbled across GS, on Facebook I think, a couple of weeks ago and in my opinion he deserves a wide platform.

I admit to being very ignorant about economics, and have learned a lot from him. He's from a working-class background, studied at LSE, became a v.successful trader, is now a multi-millionaire, and is advocating for higher taxes for the super-rich, with the aim being to inform the public and push for policy change.

I won't post a link in case it's not allowed, but do Google him if you're interested.

Is that you Gary?

Pemba · 24/03/2025 16:00

No, my niece was telling me about this guy, and I do keep meaning to have a look on YouTube. Sounds like he might know what he's talking about. It appears to be Stevenson with a V btw.

Entangledlife · 24/03/2025 16:03

My sister sent me some links a few months ago and I really like him. He's very eloquent and speaks a lot of sense.

EmpressoftheMundane · 24/03/2025 16:07

Stephen Bartlet’s “Diary of a CEO” did a podcast with him that I keep meaning to listen to.

OriginalUsername2 · 24/03/2025 16:14

I’ve watched a few of his interviews, definitely recommend. Eye opener. He does a good job at explaining just how rich the rich are.

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 24/03/2025 16:19

He's very interesting.

I'm hoping he does go ahead with letting someone from the Labour party come on in the near future.

It’s definitely Gary

PocketSand · 24/03/2025 16:32

He theorised and because of his job bet on the continued rise of inequality and the impact on interest rates. Turned out he was right. In 2011. In the last 4-5 years inequality has grown enormously. Covid was the biggest driver. Interest rates are still relatively low. Objective data have not proved him wrong yet.

His political argument is that this drive to inequality that leads to the poor becoming poorer whilst the rich get richer is a feature of late/post capitalism.

His analysis may be correct but I’m not sure what his solution is. Maybe that’s asking too much of him.

PocketSand · 24/03/2025 17:02

The Labour Party are not the solution. They are not going to be convinced by a podcast and tax the rich.

Maybe organised labour was crucial in the fight against organised capital and we just have to live with low wages, poor social services, high rents with little chance to buy without inherited wealth. Maybe people didn’t realise the dire consequences and just wanted their bins emptied or potholes filed. Maybe they didn’t realise they’d need top up benefits because wages didn’t cover basic costs. Now they are reliant on the state. Because wages don’t cover basic needs and the state financially backs employers.

No one thought that the state would pay to support low wages and high rents.

And now they want to cut disability benefits to allow continued financial support to employers and landlords so they can continue to pay low wages and charge high rents.

Rosie8880 · 24/03/2025 18:41

He is great. Tax wealth not income. He speaks in an accessible way and cuts thru jargon. I feel like he is showing how much of the economy is basically emperors new clothes - of course we can tax people with over £10m+ a further 1-2%. He’s pushed very successfully the conversation to do a number of things - highlight just how much wealth the very wealthiest have (billions…); highlight the way tax is different for those who earn money vs those who earn passive income (via assets) and that ofc we can adjust tax across both areas; that if we continue to cut welfare, it will cost taxpayers MORE, in addition to the morality of it. He knew he was going to get ripped apart soon (it’s now happening) and asks us to spread the message - what he wants:- he wants people like his family and pals from east London to be financially secure. To have secure home and to have some money left at end of month. I mean - it’s not exactly radical but it’s being seen as radical by some X

Justputtingthisoutthere · 24/03/2025 18:58

Nope, I'm definitely not Gary!

I'm a middle aged woman, worried about how the younger generation are going to survive ( I have two young adult dcs).

I'm also really fed up of how the same broken record gets played by the right-wing media that everything would be fixed if we got rid of the EU (nope, didn't work), and immigrants (that won't work either).

I'm hoping that more and more people will understand how the economy works and start asking questions and demanding real change.

Tax wealth, not work.

I'm with you Gary!

I've posted his videos here before in various discussions about inequality.

Tinygem · 24/03/2025 19:15

He just speaks so much sense, so glad he's being heard. There is another way.

Justputtingthisoutthere · 24/03/2025 19:32

Just asked MNHQ to correct the spelling of Gary's name in the title.

Thanks for pointing it out.

The Labour party have just asked him for an interview on his channel. Gary has asked his audience if they support the idea.

notprincehamlet · 24/03/2025 19:49

I'm hoping he does go ahead with letting someone from the Labour party come on in the near future.
None of what he's saying is news to Labour, it's just they have zero interest in it. The Tories spent years hollowing out the country and Labour's opening move? Not to tax the mountain of unearned wealth protected by the Tories, but to hike up the cost of working for a living. Labour FFS! And today's desperate housing crisis is in no small part a legacy of (New) Labour's fondness for buy-to-let (and most of them had their snouts in that particular trough - remember principled politician Michael Meacher?)
Alas the days when Labour were interested in addressing wealth inequality are long gone.

He is brilliant. Found him via James O’Brian and The Trawl a little while ago. Share him far and wide as far as I am concerned!

OnlyDespairRemains · 24/03/2025 20:07

He doesn’t pretend to have all of the answers - the important thing is to get people talking about it more, rather than just accepting it as normal and inevitable as the multi-millionaires and billionaires would like us to do.

If we don’t then we (or rather our children and grandchildren) are heading towards a modern version of serfdom.

Except, for some reason the public are dead aganist this.
Just look at how unpopular inheritance tax is.
I can't make sense of the 'tax people scraping by more' so that the richest 4% (who aren't even alive anymore) can leave hundreds of thousands of pounds without paying a penny of tax.

sparkle17 · 24/03/2025 21:18

I seen him on diary of a ceo this week and was impressed so have watched a few of his videos now. It feels very accurate and scary for future generations.

fruitandbarley · 24/03/2025 21:23

His book ' the trading game' all about how he started and what happened to him is brilliant. I got it on audio for when I was driving and couldn't stop listening.

Darkmorningsarethepits · 24/03/2025 21:26

Isn’t the argument that if you tax the rich they just leave?

and that in terms of bringing in income it’s actually a drop in the ocean compared to taxing the middle income masses?

Blemin · 24/03/2025 22:36

The rich can leave, but the houses are still here. The utilities are still here. Chelsea football club is in Chelsea, no matter where Abramovich has fled to.

Not all assets are movable.

Gary put out a video a while back, explaining why most economists don't really consider wealth inequality.
I found it fascinating.

The super optimistic part of me is hoping Labour have seen how very badly they are doing and are desperate enough to maybe listen, but I don't have much faith that would ever happen.
They'd need a considerably higher amount of open-mindedness than they've ever displayed.

I'm finding it hard to tell the difference between Labour and the Tories nowadays.
Just wish there was a party who were genuinely interested in improving the lives of British residents and not in filling their own pockets every time they get into power.

It's nice to see he has a few people on here watching his videos though.
