Things that are meant to be better but are not better

Look, I’m not a Luddite- I usually love technology.

But why oh why have headphones jacks been removed from phones and tablets? I don’t want Bluetooth headphones or earbuds that I have to worry about charging before I go anywhere and that cost a zillion dollars. I want cheap old fashioned headphones that don’t go flat that can be plugged into your device and just work. I don’t want to use the charging port for headphones- I like to charge my device while using it. I want headphone jacks back.

YABU- Everything new is always better
YANBU- some things were not broken and should have been left alone

I can't use ear buds because my earholes are too small. This pisses me right off.

You can get ear buds for small ears - haven’t tried any myself but I plan to as I have this same problem www.techradar.com/audio/headphones/earbuds-airpods/best-earbuds-for-small-ears

We had a very expensive oven which was too clever for its own good, all digital, touch screen with an app, a million settings and preset programmes, self cleaning etc etc. It cooked unevenly and slowly (much worse than our previous 20 year old cheap brand fan oven). I've had endless dealings with the company to no avail. Finally bought a different oven which has actual knobs and cooks properly.

Buying new oven soon. Which was bad make and what did you replace it with.

bloodredfeaturewall · 24/03/2025 11:25

yes to the 'appification'

I'm also bemused by banks/solicitors/phone companies/energy companies etc who make access 'secure' via apps and tell you to not click on links and at the same time send emails to you with 'click on this link to access important documents'...

exiledfromcornwall · 24/03/2025 11:26

Wow, I wasn't aware headphone jacks have been removed. I haven't tried these earbuds but they sound like something I would hate. I can't bear putting things right in my ear. YANBU.

Having to accept or reject cookies all the bloody time.

The need to use apps has to be one of the most irritating things about life today. DH and I were looking at cars a while back and dropped into a car showroom to browse what was around. There was no information about any of the cars to read in the windscreens etc. The salesman came out and asked us what we were looking for and we pointed out that there was no information available to read about any of the vehicles. He started on about downloading the app and how easy it was and so on - I said I've left my phone at home and I'm not downloading info on my DH's phone for every single car just to find out if it's even in our budget! If this app was so good - he could walk around with us and tell the price of every car in the showroom. He refused and we walked out and he lost a potential sale.

Oh they’re not worried about in house sales these days given 1 in every 5 new casr is sold on the Mobility Scheme to customers who never enter a car sales showroom. 😏

askmenow · 24/03/2025 11:42

I often have to rinse my hands under a hotwater tap to turn on my digital induction hob as my hands are too cold.
But if I leave the edge of a tea towel on the ceramic top, the hob bleeps constantly it’s so sensitive.

jbf19 · 24/03/2025 11:51

Autoflush toilets. Flush when sit down, halfway doing your pee. When you want it to flush, wave your hand over the sensor panel, does it flush? No! Waving, put hand over sensor and everything inbetween, then it flushes a minute after you done this.

Surely wastes more water than a manual flush?

I'm regularly infuriated by NatWest - I buy something online, enter my card details, it defaults to the screen that tells you the bank will send you a code. I get a text from the bank detailing the amount and who I'm paying and a code to complete the transaction. But the text starts with a message that says "WARNING if somebody has asked for this code they are a criminal"
Erm... it's the bloody BANK who are sending me the code that I HAVE to input before I can buy the ruddy thing!

Also, to echo those who hate the parking apps - our town has just introduced (or rather forced) paying to park. You get a free 30 mins (only once a day mind), then have to pay for each 30 mins afterwards. However, to get your free 30 mins, you have to enter a specific code, either in the app or on a machine in the street (which doesn't give you a paper ticket or anything, so you've no proof and then have to remember the time you arrived).

If you want to pay for additional parking, you then have to enter a different code in the app, or schlep back to the machine in the street to do it. So if you're in Sainsbury's or the Post Office in a queue and your time is nearly up, you have to abandon everything to go out in the street because there is no mobile signal in the store! And the app has a countdown timer on it, but also a default setting that charges you 10p to send you a text to remind you your time is up, rather than giving the option of turning that ON, so half the town have been paying 10p for 'free' parking. I don't really mind paying to park, but the council seem to have chosen the most complex way possible to do so.

ShakespeareInTurmoil · 24/03/2025 11:59

I’ve just bought a home with a super fancy modern boiler. I generally just run heating when I’m chilly, rather than on a schedule but I can’t do that here. I can’t just switch it on or hit boost. It has to be programmed against the thermostat the a remote every time. I just want an on/off switch!

And parking apps. Register your car, upload card details, remember another password, select location… I just want to beep my card on the terminal and be done!

ColourlessGreenIdeasSleepFuriously · 24/03/2025 11:59

Fucking car fucking parking fucking apps

BunnyLake · 24/03/2025 12:00

I s agree with you OP. I just want to be able to put my ear buds in on a whim, not realise I haven’t charged them (mine seem to take two days charging before they deign to connect 😡).

I actually think most things are worse not better after ‘improvements’ as no one ever changes something because they think the customer wants or likes it, it’s always money motivated.

Subscriptions. For bloody everything. So unnecessary.

This. One of the most annoying things in modern life.

Thanks! Just went to buy one of these, and found you can also now get earphones with a USB-C connector 🙂

I do kind of agree that everything's being digitised whether it needs it or not. Why, in the name of any god, do household appliances need to be online? It's great for those who like being able to switch the washer on remotely or have their fridge order their shopping for them, but why is it getting so difficult to find machines that just do what you want when you push the button?? My washer isn't 'smart' but it still needs three different button presses in the correct order to get going - and has secret functions that you access with secret button sequences, which you have to go online to find out about Confused

My printer won't even work if it's not online. This baffles me. My shonky broadband goes out when we have heavy rain, so I can't bloody print anything in wet weather. It also plays tunes for no reason I've been able to discern. Someone in HP product development actually went "Let's build in a feature that stops the customer using her printer!" ... and they all went "Great idea, Sam, go for it! And make it musical!" WHY??

News of connected medical implants terrifies me. I'm not afraid of "Them" controlling me remotely or any of that shit - well, apart from the function the device is supposed to control - but have these people never visited the real world, where wireless connections drop or don't exist at all?

I love tech and am the opposite of a Luddite. But I do a lot of eye-rolling about pointless improvements that needlessly complicate things. God help us all when the Great Cyber Attack succeeds. No making yourself a cup of tea, since the power and water supplies depend on t'internet, and our analogue phone service will have been switched off so we won't be able to moan to each other 😬

@GarlicStyle I have two printers that I can never get to work! My sister told me she can’t get hers to either. It’s infuriating and I end up having to go to the local print shop.

moto748e · 24/03/2025 12:13

God, yes. why can't parking be like the Tube: you flash your card on entry, and again on exit. No names or pack-drill required?

The Tube is actually a Good Thing, compared to the old system. Remember having to queue to buy tickets?

Having to accept or reject cookies all the bloody time.

Which reminds me, even MN and their ad unblocker thing. Every time I go in I have to come out again then go back in and choose an option before I can come on here. I did go through the process it tells you to but still it pops up.

My Bluetooth earphones are pretty good, too, @Bjorkdidit. But they fall out of my ears! I wanted some wired ones so they'll still be attached to me when they fall off. Now ordered from the Evil Chinese Marketplace for four quid, thanks to this thread. (I totally do buy stuff from there, when it's patently the same thing a UK seller charges five times as much for!)

Ngl, I actually looked for the Evil Chinese Marketplace.

BunnyLake · 24/03/2025 12:28

I can’t use my internet if the microwave is on.

Iphone ios upgrades nearly always result in a worse user experience. Latest one being my phone no longer makes any sound when I get a text. The constant moving about of functions so when you google about fixing something it’s no longer in that place, they’ve moved it (go to settings, go to notifications etc, no it’s not there any more, where have you put it!).

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 24/03/2025 12:47

TV - there's too much so now I watch nothing.

VickyEadieofThigh · 24/03/2025 12:50

Enko · 24/03/2025 08:15

I am the same. I ended up using bone headphones. What did you find works for you?
(Sorry for derail)

@CrocsNotDocs for me its soundproof headphones. Drives me insane I cannot rouse anyone in my house. They are all closed in their little bubble of soubdproofness.. thank heavens for the dog

I'm still using wired "sports" ones that have a bit that goes around your ear to keep the buds in place. Even the smallest buds that come without the plastic ear bit will not stay in my ears.

crisantemi · 24/03/2025 12:10

Yes!

Especially if you have to receive a text to proceed.
I have rubbish phone signal at home and can barely make calls or receive texts. I've lost count of the times I've been timed out of transactions only to finally get the code about 5 hours later.

As l said in an earlier thread (and was pooh-poohed for), if you have hearing aids with Bluetooth you can connect them to your phone. They are brilliant.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/03/2025 13:21

No signal in Central London with 3 mobile. EVER. I was at the theatre last week and had to get the box office to print the tickets as it just wouldn’t load. Me and about 50 other people. Bloke behind counter said there’s no signal there. FFS
