To apply to be an ofsted inspector?

Has anyone been an Ofsted inspector? What’s is it like in reality? I have been met with horror from friends IRL so thought I’d ask anonymously!
I am currently a Headteacher but want a change. My children are little though which worries me!

I think it is a very hard job. If you thrive on working in a group it's not for you.
Many people will hare you carrying out your day-to-day job.

@Cupofteaandbiscuits I'm one. If DMs are working, please feel free to message me.

I think it may involve a lot of travel.
It could be very lonely I think.
Most of your colleagues really dislike ofsted and ofsted inspectors. Depends if that bothers you.

Goldenmemories · 23/03/2025 20:33

Are you a teacher OP?

Are you a teacher OP?

Yes. I’m a very experienced teacher and now a Headteacher in a large primary school.

I know 2 people who did it, both said it was really interesting, both said it was really hard work and very intense bursts. Both lasted 3 years and then went back into schools.

Why would you want to join the organisation who bear some responsibility for the death of Ruth Perry and who then published a report that mentioned her death in the same breath as breakfast club provision? An organisation that is actively toxic to education and schools?

Philandbill · 23/03/2025 21:18

Do you think that Ofsted have improved the education system as a whole? Base your judgement on that.

Shetlands · 23/03/2025 21:20

I'm a retired Headteacher and education adviser. I did the Ofsted qualification and did some inspections but I didn't find it professionally rewarding. I enjoyed the analysis of data, work scrutinies, observing lessons etc but just as you're getting to know the school, it's time to leave. I preferred the adviser role, working alongside schools, helping them to make progress and develop strong leadership teams.

GoatCatTaco · 23/03/2025 21:29

The one I know is a currently a head teacher, with some days off to do the ofsted stuff. For her, it isn't a FT role.

PerkyGreyWasp · 23/03/2025 21:34

Just think back to what Ofsted were doing while we were all working our asses off in schools during the lockdowns, desperate for enough staff to keep schools open and you'll see the value they bring to schools. Absolutely none.

Just found this thread, did you apply to Ofsted? I'm considering it at the moment too but worried about travel.
