Adolescence - spoilers!!! - where were the girls?

Would be really interested to hear people’s thoughts on this having just finished the Netflix series. It was undoubtedly very powerful in exploring how boys become misogynist and the dangers of the online world. But did anyone else feel that - for a show supposedly about violence against women and girls - there was no exploration at all of how it would actually feel to be a girl at that high school, subject to online image abuse and much, much worse? The victim was only ever a photograph, and the one teen girl character, her friend Jade, was barely in it.

As has been discussed on the millions of other threads that already exist on this show, decentring women is probably the whole point.

From the threads on here, if everything that people have complained was missed out of Adolescence, it would need more episodes than friends.

it was a 4 hour series that covered a time period of 3 months, with multiple POV characters, they could only fit so much in!

This 'whataboutery' is like asking 'But when is international MEN's day, hmmm?'

This program centred around the experiences of 13 year old boys. If they do a sequel/second series perhaps they'll focus on the female/victim POV, or maybe another screenwriter will be inspired to do their version, but that's not what this program is about.

I don’t think this is quite on the same level as agitating for an International men’s day! I read an interview with one of the creators - they specifically said that they wanted to write something about violence against women and girls. So the lack of that perspective felt like a missing piece to me but overall I thought the show was excellent and very important.

I thought it was a load of virtue signalling trollop and a vanity project, very dull watching and didn’t really highlight anything except how bloody awful most secondary schools probably are!

I saw an interview with Stephen Graham and he said after seeing news stories about young boys stabbing young girls, he wanted to explore why this is happening and the effect on the family and wider community. We see a lot of drama which shows the effect on the victims families (and rightly so) but this was a different perspective. We didn't actually see much about the personalities of the perpetrator or the victim, and it wasn't an in depth look at incel culture really either. I think it was about the human story of the family and police officers involved and the effect of these types of crimes.

yes, that makes sense. And the why of it is so important. It is a great show.

It was lost on you then.

Did we watch a completely different show?

Well the girl died. That’s the point.
