Did you get a puppy and a kitten at the same time?

Help me think this through please!
I have been researching getting a dog for a long while and will potentially be getting a puppy in the summer.
Would I be mental to get a kitten/cat at the same time? Would a kitten be better so they get used to each other? Did you do it and regret it or was it a good choice?
Please talk me out of it 😂

You'd be totally insane to do that. A puppy takes a huge amount of time and effort, and integrating with a cat takes even more effort. Integrating with a skittery, fragile, kitten is going to be massively harder again

Well I ve never had a puppy but I took on a kitten with an existing cat and it was a lot of work (kitten had been dumped at 4 weeks old) and they need a lot of care and interaction (supervised) to build a relationship.

A puppy and a kitten will both be babies needing lots of care at the same time just away from mum not long ago.

I wouldn't......and if you do you need the patience of a saint and probably other human help.

2 babies. 2 lots of toilet training etc. 2 crying at night maybe?

My kitten is now 16 months and he adores my 8 year old cat. She can take or leave him depends on mood.

We did it when we were teens and I got the puppy and my sister got the kitten. They were very close as tinies and had a good relationship later as well - this is the plus side. The downside was total chaos

Hoppinggreen · 23/03/2025 10:17

I have done both and they almost broke me (especially the puppy).
You would be nuts to even consider this

Bubblesgun · 23/03/2025 10:17

Kitten first
then puppy when kitten out of kitten year

not the other way around.

both at the same time? Madness

No personal experience but I do know a couple who did this. He had always wanted a dog and she a cat so they got a puppy and a kitten at the same time.

AFAIK it all worked out ok. The dog was hard work to begin with but probably would have been, kitten or not.

I think they used to make sure, for a while, that the kitten could always get to some place the puppy couldn't reach. Eg. they would leave the ironing board up as the kitten could get on there and be out of reach of the dog.

Anyway, once they had the animals settled they had a baby as well so, gluttons for punishment.

Wouldn't it be as difficult as having twins? Two tiny creatures needing you at the same time?
Or maybe even worse as they won't wear nappies
I wouldn't do it

Ha, maybe it’s not the best idea then. I am already prepared for the amount of work a puppy will take and I maybe naively thought adding a kitten in to the mix wouldn’t be too much harder 😂

Kitten first. Get them settled and happy. Then get a puppy.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 23/03/2025 18:29

I've always seen friends get the puppy first, as a cat won't take kindly to a dog, but a dog will accept a kitten.

What about rescuing an adult cat that already doesn’t mind being around dogs?

What’s your reason for wanting both?
