To want to know where would be a good place to buy a two bedroom place in the sun, near a sandy beach, and local amenities

thinking of doing this as a sort of 10-15 year investment
and to also enjoy it
a bolt hole

we like Majorca, Cyprus (although flights there tend to be dearer)
Italy, Spain,

inhave a health condition that sadly isn’t curable but Is helped by the better weather so that a big reason for doing this too, humidity helps and dryness doesn’t

Do you have a Budget? Anywhere you like, otherwise! I also recall someone I know buying a house in a gorgeous location but not thoroughly researching flight frequency/cost and ended up regretting it so accessibility to you should be factored in...

Do you plan to rent it out as a holiday let when you're not using it? This would also be a factor as would dictate location to some extent.

How exciting!! ☀️🌊🌴😃

Do you know about the 90 day rule?

Mycatisanevilgenius · 23/03/2025 01:55

Ideally less than 100k and tbh as chaps as possible
yeah load of other places we like
think ideally European so we are not too far from home
yes I’m trying to just accept these health issues and just crack on with things best I can

Don’t think we will rent it as don’t want it trashing or risking it

It’s fine for you in that case.

I’ve travelled all over Spain. My favourite area is the province of Valencia. Have a look at Alcossebre and Oliva. Both are lovely places with fabulous beaches.

My cousin has an Eu passport but his wife only has her UK passport.
She had to observe the 90 day rule until they went through some process in the country they have their house in. So I would double check.

I live in mallorca, and you would be lucky to buy a garage near a beach here for £100k!

with a UK passport you cannot stay longer than 90 days at a time, even if your partner has an EU passport. You would need some form of residency to stay longer which is quite expensive and hard to get. You also need health insurance as a condition and this isn’t cheap with pre existing conditions.

mainland Spain would be doable - you can buy perfectly pleasant static caravans in some places which aren’t far from the sea.

PoppyFleur · 23/03/2025 06:21

Without residency in which ever country you choose, you would need to abide by the EU 90 day rule. You should also consider the total cost of ownership (purchase fees, maintenance costs, utilities, insurance, plus securing property when not in residence).

Will you be seeking to use the property for more than 6 months of the year? If so you will need to seek residency which isn’t cheap.

As an alternative, have you considered long term renting out of season? Rentals are cheaper out of season - say January to March in places like Tunisia. The cost of living is lower, so day to day costs affordable, the climate is mild at that time of year but generally warmer than Europe, and it will not eat into your EU 90 day allowance.

I’d definatly consider a static caravan as long as it also has aircon, I’m sure dh would much prefer a flat or soemthing tho, something that’s morenofnanninvestment rather then a caravan

Yes I have thought about that, long term rentals would be a good way to try it out and to try out different areas too

Perhaps getting a place in Italy would be easier from a admin point of view ?

Zanatdy · 23/03/2025 07:19

I’d definitely start with some long term rentals. Check out areas before committing. Long term rentals may be better as you can check out different areas

Yes this seems a sensible way forward Without the commitment after a month you get a good feel for a place, I’d still need to check out the property prices etc tho, incase we loved it and thought yep let’s get something here, so knowing where prices are not insane would be also a wise start
puglia region in Italy always used to be good value for money due to lack of job but that fine as we can work from home online

I'm not sure of the rules for Italy but check you will be legally allowed to work if you are there as a spouse of an Italian citizen. You may have to apply for family reunification before working is legal. I know many digital nomads do work like this without applying for a digital nomad visa but they're actually breaking the law. It would be worth finding out what your rights and obligations are legally before jumping
