To assume that people who constantly brag about their money or success are usually inflating the truth?

I’ve noticed that the people who go on and on about how much they earn, their investments, or how “successful” they are often don’t seem to be as well-off as they claim. It’s always the loudest ones who end up having some financial issues lurking in the background.

Meanwhile, the people who are genuinely wealthy or successful tend to be more discreet about it. It makes me wonder if there’s a general rule that when someone brags, you should assume the reality is about 50% or what they claim.

AIBU to think that if someone constantly talks about their money, they’re probably exaggerating? Or do some people just genuinely like sharing their success?

Some people are just knobs. My (v down to earth) friend was married to someone like this, he thought he was better than us plebs so loved telling everyone how rich and successful he was, thankfully he’s now an ex.

Money talks, wealth whispers.

Who do you know who shouts about their wealth? I hardly know anyone in the last 5 or so years who even mentions money.

Agree. Have worked in the HNW industry for over 30 years. Those clients that are particularly showy/braggy about their wealth are often the ones that eventually end up bankrupt when their robbing Peter to Pay Paul lifestyle catches up with them.

There are others who are incredibly humble about their wealth, not showy at all and I've been staggered at their portfolios and the kind of lifestyle they live (very nice, but not particularly ostentatious)

This also seems to be the case when bragging about things on social media - particularly how much they love their OH and their little famalam. They usually have the most untrustworthy, toxic, controlling relationships ime. I know you in real life Sarah, and I also know your DH has had several affairs throughout your marriage, but that picture of nice Sunday roast and a glass of wine at your local carvery with #thisone will keep me thinking all is rosy in your household 🙄

They can be telling the truth, a friend who sold his business was a bragger but he did make the millions he claimed. I knew him when he had fuck all, and he became less and less fun and more and more self obsessed the more money he made. He seemed to be under the impression that more money makes you “better” in some way - it really doesn’t

I suppose it depends on the circles you’re in. I’ve come across quite a few people - whether in work, social settings, or online - who seem to bring up their wealth or success at every opportunity. Maybe it’s more common in certain environments?

Definitely in a professional sense - I've interviewed a lot of people and the super successful ones are always the best to work with, responsive, polite, humble, tell me afterwards that they like the story. The ones who aren't as successful but like to pretend they are will be difficult, nitpick, take their time getting back to you as they are 'so busy' and find something to complain about afterwards. It's remarkably consistent, and I'm sure it's the same with wealth.

Absolutely. My accountant has told me that of all the clients she has. It’s the ones who are driving the brand new flashy cars, wearing designer gear, bragging about wanting everything yesterday, are the ones who are up to their eyeballs in debt..
