Neighbour’s kid picked my daffodils

Lucylooloo2 · 21/03/2025 22:48

Just that really, had lots of notifications of movement on the doorbell camera and lo and behold a kid (8ish years old) from a few houses down with a bunch of daffodils in her hand.

Checked mine in my front garden when I got home and Every. Single. One. has been taken.

I’m just really sad tbh. Know there are much bigger problems in the world but they were a little spark of joy for me 😕

Some back tracking there no doubt.

No one is going to war. What an exaggeration. Your first post was really mean, just own it.

minisoksmakehardwork · 23/03/2025 12:25

I have flowers on my front garden. Some are prolific and flower loads during their blooming season. I don't mind if kids pick a small handful of those because another bunch will pop up quite soon. But I would be gutted if my daffs and tulips went.

No harm in knocking on the child's door and while acknowledging what's done is done, saying they're not to do it again.

Busybeemumm · 23/03/2025 12:30

@Wishingplenty It just goes to show if adults are prepared to go to war for a child taking a few flowers, then there really is no hope for achieving any peace on this earth.
If adults were able to role model and teach children respect and boundaries then there is more likely to be peace on earth.

Don't be a twat. Is there a hierarchy of flowers that people are allowed to steal from other people's gardens? Also, people with 'real' problems can still be upset or annoyed about other relatively minor issues. Sometimes, minor problems can be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

Thank you. Yes. When my husband died, one of the few things to help lift my spirits was being able to see flowers in bloom in the garden.

My brother's widow has planted flowers where his ashes are buried in the garden. I can't imagine how distressed she'd be if someone entered and picked them.

WearyAuldWumman · 23/03/2025 12:51

A PP suggested that daffodils are cheap. As many of us have said, there's more to value than monetary cost. However, I'll point out that some varieties are harder to obtain and can be costly.

I've cut back on ordering bulbs and plants for the moment, but certain daffodils can be quite expensive - and then there's the labour involved in feeding said varieties so that they don't come up blind.

@AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta so there is flower picking bat signal is there?

Well IME most kids have both eyes and FOMO. They see Sarah from number 7 knocking on the OPs door and getting special permission to pick her daffs (yes, even just two) and think I want to do that too. Even if it'd never occurred to them before.

My mum has a specific bed filled with my dad's favourite flowers. The thought of anyone picking them (even to make their mum smile on mother's day) makes me feel sick. And I don't care how precious that makes me sound.

💐 For you @WearyAuldWumman .

ThinWomansBrain · 23/03/2025 12:59

Complain to the parents, the child should not be trespassing or stealing. Tell them you have video evidence.

As for those that think it's sweet - FFS
I hope the parents address the issue- if she goes through life stealing and trespassing she'll end up well.

I think the responses are truly interesting and also concerning. It just goes to show if adults are prepared to go to war for a child taking a few flowers, then there really is no hope for achieving any peace on this earth. The human race truly is petted minded. Everyone has their own opinions and views, and the backlash I am receiving for offering a more level headed prespective shows what stage we are at, as humans trying to live in a more harmonious world. It ain't happening anytime soon. Op if it was such a heinous crime that this little girl committed then why did you not just call the police?Surely that would have been the right thing to do for such a serious incident.

I wasn’t going to respond to this but in the end I wanted to put my two cents in.

I acknowledged in my first post that there are much bigger problems in this world than this…. but just maybe I too have experienced much bigger problems and these daffodil are more than just ‘weeds’ to me.

Also FYI you can’t one minute call me ‘truly pathetic’ for simply expressing sadness and then the next minute say you want to live in a harmonious world. Doesn’t really work that way.

I wont be posting any further than this, but the damage has been done, the parent has (somewhat) apologised and so we move on.

Thank you to everyone that’s replied and offered advice and tried to make me feel better x

I think many non gardeners don't realise how much effort and patience goes into gardening. There's no instant gratification how we have become so accustomed to in the modern world. I am glad it has been resolved and hopefully the little girl had learnt a lesson.

Very well said, OP.

BunnyLake · 23/03/2025 13:11

Do you have a garden gate and border (wall, fence) or is it ‘open plan’? Is it practical to put a sign up if it’s an open area? No trespassing?

I find your comment interesting. What do you think Putin is doing? He's wanting something that is not his and just taking it.....same as Hitler did. Yes its a massive reach a huge stretch of circumstances.....but it is the same principle. "I want that, I will take it"

Is there a price point below which people are not allowed to be upset at trespass and theft?

Exactly.
I had a coat stolen once, it wasn't mega expensive but it kept me warm in the winter.
Had it been a dearer coat it would have mattered, but as it was so cheap....🙄

I also love having fresh flowers in the garden, especially daffodils. However, that little spark of joy they bring you? They clearly also spark that in others 🥰 maybe that little girl picked them for her mam for mothers day! Super sweet x

Not super sweet at all - stealing and trespassing on someone else’s property.

Super vom more like. If it's my spark of joy, I want it. I don't want it stolen to give to someone else.

No. After your mean and spiteful little post you don't get to lecture the rest of us sanctimoniously like this or present your view as 'level headed'. And you can lay off the exaggeration of what people are saying; no nobody is being aggressive, nobody is going to war and nobody thinks it is a police matter.

Much of the threat to world harmony is from people like this child's parents who don't foster respect in their children for other people's property, and by extension their boundaries; which ultimately lowers the quality of life for everyone.

Mmm you said it "boundaries" which is literally what all wars are about.

They weren’t expensive perennials, they were daffodils.

A) daffodil bulbs can be expensive
B) value isn’t just about money
c) i don’t care if it’s a pile of empty ale cans, no trespassing little brat is welcome to take anything from my garden.

Those of you defending the eight year old must be quite a treat. Would love to buy your neighbours a drink.

That's lovely. ❤

A funny little story, when my mum was alive, she had a small patch of communal garden at the back of her house, but she (in her own words) was 'not very good with flowers', so she left it bare.

She and my OH were always at loggerheads, (in a mostly friendly way thank goodness) so being a bit mischievous, I planted some pansies, the ones that have black markings, that always look like a mans face with dark eyebrows and a dark moustache. Now, my OH had a dark moustache and dark eyebrows, so we figured every time she opened her back door, she would see lots of little flowers that looked just like her son in law.😄
Luckily, she did see the joke.

I hope you and your boys don’t live near me, what a ridiculous attitude to trespassing and theft. Hopefully there’s someone in their life to teach them right from wrong.

Maybe so, but it’s only March this year and she wanted them to look at in her garden THIS YEAR.
