To ask opticians to refer DS to the eye hospital?

DS is almost 12 and had a mild myopic prescription at age 5 (around -0.25) this rapidly deteriorated when he was around 7/8 and we opted for myopia lenses at around age 9 to slow down the progression as he had gone to around -4.00.
He's had an eye test today and despite wearing the lenses and us following all the advice about staying off phone/devices/getting outdoors lots hes now at -6.00 and im really worried about them deteriorating any further.
We have purchased new myopia glasses today (around £250 but well worth it if they help at all) but wondering if there is something else we/opticians should be doing.
Any advice would be massively appreciated. Unfortunately Google was consulted and im now in a flap worrying about retinal detachment and macular issues!

The optician would have checked for red flaga. Did they do all the imaging etc?

Unfortunately childhood myopia is highly progressive. All you can do is try to slow it as you have been. The good news is that the rate of progression slows in teenagehood. We are in a similar situation and I worry a lot about DD.

Yes, they have done all the imaging and everything is fine. Hes under a neurology for vestibular migraines with visual disturbances (colours in vision which lead to nausea and vomiting) so im a little unsure if maybe the two are linked. I may give his neurologist a call and let her know about the big change in prescription.

Thanks rainylake, it's a worry isnt it. Im hoping it will start to slow down soon but most of the things I've read have said it can continue to progress until 18-20 which is a long way to go. Hoping the new lenses may help.

My son is on the myopia management at the moment. He's following me unfortunately. My eye sight got worse quickly as a child. I just want to slow his progression as you are doing. I'm not sure what the eye hospital would do at this stage. Maybe speak to you opticians if you are worried, and yes stay away from google.

I presume you’ve seen the GP and asked for a referral re his eyes

PleaseSayThatAgain · 21/03/2025 22:37

No, we haven't seen the gp. I wasn't sure if the gp would do a referral or if that would have to come from the opticians? My daughter was under the eye hospital for severe astigmatism when she was very young and that referral was done through the opticians so we've never been through the gp. Is that something that we could do?

Thanks Alwaystired23, does your dc have the glasses or lenses? I've seen there are some hard lenses that can be used in some age groups to help slow down progression but I'm not sure ds would cope with them.
