To think that most people who say they love “travel” just like posting about it?

You didn’t “immerse yourself in the culture,” you took selfies at a resort.

OP posts:
stillwaitingtobepaid · 21/03/2025 20:57

OP have you been on the juice this evening!!??
Back in the day ,before social media ,people sent postcards ,it really isn’t that hard to work out that people have always shared their travel experiences with friends and family 🤦‍♀️

varden · 21/03/2025 21:02

Posting selfies on SM is so bloody tacky dahlings. Everyone is doing it so it's not unique anymore. As pp said, every available "sight and site" is overrun with selfie sticks and loopy grins with usually a big sun cap/hat hiding the bloody thing anyway!

No pics from me, apart from sunsets and that kind of thing. I did take one fabulous picture (not with me in it) of the interior of the Mezquita in Cordoba (see how I name dropped that one lol), and to this day it gives me great pleasure to look at the amazing colours and the pillars that just seem to go on for miles in an optical illusion.

Anyway, whatever way you do it, enjoy it your way.

wizzywig · 21/03/2025 21:05

I love holiday prep, being at the airport/ train station,/ packing the car. Love an airport or service station - so many people watching opportunities! Love the journey.

TheFunHare · 21/03/2025 21:06

I think this post says far more about your friends and the people you choose to associate with on social media than it does about modern day travel habits.

ShanghaiDiva · 21/03/2025 21:08

Some of my friends who love to travel post all the details on Facebook. But as they’re my friends I’m interested in their photos and observations.

offmynut · 21/03/2025 21:10

I love to travel been all over the world but i dont post nothing on SM because i dont have SM.
They are my good times no need to tell the world about it.

HottyBotty · 21/03/2025 21:11

I love travelling. I don't post about it.

I love feeling excited at the airport, like a little kid!

I love seeing new places, eating new food, meeting new people, seeing new animals and wildlife, seeing new buildings, experiencing different cultures.

I love not being here! Not having to worry about work, life, schools, emails...

I love watching the sunset while hugging my husband and drinking something tasty

I love watching my children see and experience things they never have before!

I love seeing the sky from a different place, feeling the sun or the snow or whatever on my face

I love walking along paths I've only read about

I love seeing places I've only seen on TV or in pictures.

I love the feeling of anxiety or fear or excitement that comes when the unexpected happens

I love tying to decipher new words and figure out train times, opening hours etc.. when the words are written in a whole new language I can't understand

I love seeing manga, cherry blossom, lions, temples, pyramids, churches, twisty roads, mountains, lakes of different colours, turtles, stars in the outback, roads that go on for miles with twists or turns, motels, tents, teepees, russian trains, Siberia, Korean food ...... etc.. etc... etc...

How anyone could not love travelling is beyond me! If I could travel forever, wth my DH and children and money was no object, I totally would. Why wouldn't you?!!

I think people can love travelling and enjoy sharing their photos

THIS

QuizzlyBears · 21/03/2025 21:13

I don’t really understand why you’re so bothered, unless what’s really going on here is jealousy and you’re looking for a reason to bring them down.

Thepeopleversuswork · 21/03/2025 21:18

Of course, but people also used to travel without feeling the need to broadcast every moment of it. Just saying there’s a difference between loving travel and loving the attention it brings.

Sorry that's nonsense. In the days before social media people got their holiday snaps out, forced people to sit through slide shows or generally banged on about it ad nauseam in the pub. People have always bored other people with their travel stories.

I'm not denying that some people are tediously performative on social media, of course they are, but it's become fashionable to attribute every evil in the world to social media. It amplifies people's show-off tendencies, but no one in their right mind shells out hundreds of pounds to go to the other side of the world just to put it on their social feeds.

Complete failure of critical thinking here OP

Sadly I suspect this is the truth.

HorrorFan81 · 21/03/2025 21:36

I love travel and I like posting pics. I love looking back on them and seeing them pop up a year later. Im assuming if others dont like seeing them they will unfollow or unfriend me.

RuxpinT · 21/03/2025 21:50

I think this is a good point! I'd be willing to bet that the number of people travelling would vastly decrease if there was no way of sharing/posting about it online and social media. But I think this could be said for loads and loads of experiences these days that everybody seems to do ... pumpkin patches is the first one that jumps to my mind 😅

Ofc loads of people love to travel and taking photos or not won't factor into it. But yes, I absolutely think that (probably) the majority do it because of social media, keeping up with the Joneses and all that.

Scottishskifun · 21/03/2025 21:57

TicklishCoralScroller · 21/03/2025 20:49

It’s not about being ‘triggered’ - just an observation. There’s a difference between loving travel and loving how it looks to other people. But sure, if people want to treat their holidays like a content creation job, it’s their choice!

I think your getting a bit mixed up here.
Of course there are those who take endless selfies but for each traveller with a selfie stick there is about 15 others rolling their eyes!

Also a big difference between a holiday and travelling! Being in a resort is not travelling it's going on holiday.

Moier · 21/03/2025 21:57

One of my passions is travel.
I have backpacked around the Greek islands.
Rode my motorbike through 9 European countries.
Spent a year in the USA (.80's) .. 26 states..
I'm a pensioner now and had 3 holidays this year ( l go once a month ) either abroad or UK.

JudgeJ · 21/03/2025 22:05

I don't have Instagram and don't have Facebook so where would I be posting about it?
I think that there are many people who cannot understand that many of us don't need the pathetic validation of their lives that they get through social media. Lives can be lived without posting anything on social media.

Flowersforcharlie · 21/03/2025 22:21

I have a friend who’s been on some amazing holidays over the years, staying in upmarket hotels in gorgeous locations - St Lucia, Antigua, Malaysia etc. Nothing off the beaten track, all booked through mainstream travel agents. She says they have been on these holidays because her husband loves to “travel”. Thing is, I just wouldn’t call it travelling. They’re just having holidays.

Jabberwok · 21/03/2025 22:25

Strangely I like looking at other people's travel photos. I also like reading travel books, reading one at the moment about someone doing a pilgrimage walk across the South of England. Love Josie Drew and Ann Mustoe books about long distance cycling. A walk in the woods is Bill bysons best book

I doubt I'll ever do anything like that but I find it fascinating to hear/read about

I hate to break it to you, but people have been bragging about and buying souvenirs on their travels since the Crusades.

CarpetKnees · 21/03/2025 22:59

YABVU.

You do seem to lack critical thought here. No-one is going to use AL and hard earned money to travel if they don't enjoy visiting new places.

Some people share their photos, other don't. Either way, you don't have to look at them if you don't want to. Personally I love seeing places friends have travelled to. When I put photos on my facebook, I assume anyone who doesn't want to see my photos will scroll past. Or indeed unfriend me if I annoyed them as much as you seem annoyed about this.

reversegear · 21/03/2025 23:02

There is a difference between travelling and a holiday.. I think what you’re talking about is the resort pics, the holiday.

The people who travel, travel unless they are Instagram famous don’t tend to post much for safety and security and because they are busy!

Themostlikely · 21/03/2025 23:04

Packs and packs of photos years ago, people have always shared their travel/holiday experiences. I do hate the selfies though, that was definitely not a thing

Calliopespa · 21/03/2025 23:07

NormasArse · 21/03/2025 20:46

My grandparents loved to travel. They would give slide shows of their travels on their return! 😁

I remember those slide shows! People would have quite a group of friends round, normally in the evening and would serve coffee and cake after the viewing. They had to turn the lights out to show them. I recall a couple of these evenings put on by friends of my grandparents when I was about three and I fell asleep on the sofa! My mum thought it was very old fashioned even then. One guy droned on a lot about each slide and he had a clicker in his hand to move to the next slide so everyone was stuck listening to the explanations.

Didimum · 21/03/2025 23:25

Posts like these are getting a bit tiresome now. Always an attack and disdain for people who are frequent on social media, always insinuating or directly accusing them of attention seeking or being disingenuous. And I’m not even someone who posts on social media at all.

The only people that need to get off social media are the people who make posts like this. Let people be and get on with your life for Christ’s sake.

Those who broadcast that they are away by posting while they are on holiday are strange. Why do they think that safe ?
