Difference in Vet fees for different towns.

I live in the middle of the UK.
A few weeks ago our dog had a very bad cough, it was so bad he trapped the nerves in his neck. Cue a 7 hour op in a pet hospital to help him walk, stayed in the clinic for 6 days after.
Brilliant service and we were very happy with the results. He is 9 years old.
Never had any other illnesses through his life.
Cost £7500. Insured for £4000

On Tuesday my brothers dog who lives 15 miles away had an eye removed after catching it on a branch. 1 hour op and home same day.
His dog is the same age and never had any illnesses before.
Cost £9750 insured for £4000

Wonder why the big difference in costs.

Well, for one thing, just off the top of my head, you are comparing two very different injuries and operations on very different parts of the body. Do you think that could be a part of it?

Different vet practices will have different charges. Especially those owned by investment groups who charge extortionate amounts normally.

We use an independent vet, who hasn't sold out and who have reasonable (not cheap) prices.

@mbosnz our vet had to go through the dogs chest to operate on the back of his neck. 72 stitches.

Brothers vet in and out in an hour. Dog wore a cone for 5 days.

Surely ours should have been dearer or brothers cheaper.

72 stitches?

did he splice open your dog with a chainsaw?

@Morningveg the scar is healing lovely.

The first 3 weeks after his op he was only allowed
in the garden for his business. Had to stay in a playpen.
Then it was increments of 2 minutes to go on a walk.
Yesterday it had risen to a 10 minute walk twice a day.
