To rehome my cat?

Lilacdaisies123 · 21/03/2025 11:32

My cat is 11 and we’ve had her since a kitten. This past year she has started urinating all over the house. She has a tray but will literally wee NEXT to it. We’ve tried keeping her outside while we’re not home, but she will look us in the eye and wee against walls. It’s getting to the point it’s embarrassing as the smell hits you as you walk through our door. Vets can’t find a cause. I want to keep her but I can’t live where I’m so conscious that me my house and kids smell of cat pee. Help.

I’ve got a similar cat and am equally embarrassed about how the house smells. To be honest I know I’ll be devastated when he dies but also slightly relieved.

im sure there’s hundreds of things you can try that people will come in to suggest but frankly they may work for a short time or may may not.

I wouldn’t rehome my cat but I can see the appeal so I don’t think I’d begrudge you doing it. Although the reality is I don’t think anyone would take them so at 11 he may be PTS or just live in a cage forever more.

Overtheatlantic · 21/03/2025 11:48

I would try looking at some Jackson Galaxy videos and see if he suggests any possible recommendations. She’s obviously doing it for a reason, to communicate something to you. It probably has to do with her territory.

wombat15 · 21/03/2025 11:49

How do you plan to rehome an 11 year old cat who is pissing everywhere?

AlwaysCoffee25 · 21/03/2025 11:51

Have you tried the feliway plugins?

I have a cat that shits and wees everywhere and it does seem to help. I think my cat is making their territory as they don’t like our other cat. I’ve started putting mine out at night now too.

I confine mine to one room when we’re not in too.

I can understand the temptation to rehome but realistically who would want them? Better living outside. She might be happy with a box or access to a shed? Although appreciate she will also wee in that.

KhakiShaker · 21/03/2025 11:51

There will be a reason she’s doing what she’s doing. Is her litter tray clean? Perhaps move it to a different location? And get a second opinion from the vet.

How do you plan to rehome an 11 year old cat who is pissing everywhere?

Exactly
You don't want her and (supposedly) love her, who else would take her on?

Mumofteenandtween · 21/03/2025 11:53

As above there is no option for “rehoming” - nobody wants an 11 year old cat that pees everywhere.

So your options are:-

  1. Keep cat and try to find ways to improve
  2. Have cat PTS
  3. Leave cat in shelter for rest of cat’s life

It is just a case of which of these you can best live with.

Lencten · 21/03/2025 11:54

Have you tried Enzyme-based cleaners for the smell and UK light to get it all?

Otherwise - have you tried different litters and even trays Jackson Galaxy videos.

Realsitically rehousing an 11 year old cat with urination issues isn't going to be easy and likely impossible.

OreganoFlow · 21/03/2025 11:55

Why would anyone else want your 11 year old cat with behavioural problems? Would you adopt a cat like that? Very few people would and you know it.

I understand it must be an extremely stressful situation and I wouldn't want to live like this either, but you need to be realistic.

Caerulea · 21/03/2025 11:55

YABU AF.

What did the vet suggest? Did they recommend any behavioural tips? Cos if they just shrugged and said 'dunno' then they are unreasonable AF too. What about the areas they've wee'd on? Fully cleaned with enzymes? Replaced?

Cats do this for a reason & as it's owner it's up to you solve them. Had you asked that question rather than jumping to 'this living creature who's been my companion for 11yrs is just inconvenient now, should I chuck it?' it would have been different.

That's what I wondered.

Bleurghel · 21/03/2025 11:56

No one is going to take her so you might as well have her PTS (not saying that you should do that either!)

ImAChangeling · 21/03/2025 11:57

I would speak to a cat behaviourist. Rehoming an 11 year old cat that pees everywhere is not a realistic option.

RedMoonSundays · 21/03/2025 11:57

Please say that you have at least taken your cat to the vet to be checked out. Lots of things like thyroid issues can cause this.

MidnightMillie · 21/03/2025 11:57

Oh yeah, so many people are going to jump at the chance to take on an elderly cat who pisses everywhere 🙄

Lencten · 21/03/2025 11:58

Stress - wanting a cleaner tray/disliking litter - previous wee not being cleaned so can still smell - you've rules out medical so one thing down.

gamerchick · 21/03/2025 11:59

There will be a reason. It could be a new cat in the area has stressed her out so is surrounding her safe place in a moat of her smell. Try a plug in, change her litter, shut her out of the rooms you don't want her in and hose down the outside of your house to get rid of any strange cat smells.

Or build a heated cat house in the garden.

Lencten · 21/03/2025 11:59

She said vet can't find a reason - so persubably vets ruled out the several possible medical reasons.

ELCismyspiritnana · 21/03/2025 12:02

First of all, get an extra litter tray. Then get at least 1 feliway plug in. Clean the pissy areas well (I use neat hydrogen peroxide as its the only thing I've ever found that really removes the smell. Patch test material for bleaching but I've never had an issue). Make sure you keep pets away while you use this.
Consider changing the litter, she might have gone off it. Also at 11 she might find it difficult to use certain high sided litter trays if she has the beginnings of arthritis so I would swap to a plain open tray for now.
Give all of the above at least 2 weeks to work, then re-evaluate if no improvement. Good luck op!

autumn1610 · 21/03/2025 12:03

I had one that would poo next to the tray so had puppy training pads down and a mat underneath, she just did not like the litter. I changed to a clumping litter instead and had no problems. Also have two trays down as some like to wee in one and poo in another. Once i swapped didn’t have an accident again and also noticed an improvement in the smell of the cat wee

ButThisIsMyHappyFace · 21/03/2025 12:04

Lots of messages assuming that you are a horrible person who doesn’t care about your cat but I can completely understand. Cat peeing outside the tray that is persistent is absolutely awful to live with. You obviously care about your cat otherwise you’d have dumped it and wouldn’t have taken her to the vet. I wouldn’t settle for “we don’t know” from the vet, and I think you should try a litter tray in every room that’s feasible. When my sister’s cat did this, it was because another cat kept coming up to the house and spraying. Liberal quantities of cheap, strong curry powder kept the other cat away. Problem settled down. Definitely use an enzyme cleaner especially for cat pee and try tin foil on the area if she has a preferred spot.

MrsSkylerWhite · 21/03/2025 12:05

This happened with our 19 year old and it was kidney failure.
Can you get a second opinion?

Pennyssmartwatch · 21/03/2025 12:05

You need to properly clean it up or the same thing will keep happening. Enzyme cleaning thoroughly, things that can be washed use biological washing powder. Try changing the litter trays (you need at least 2 trays) and type of litter you're using.

You could try zylkene and plug ins in case it's a stress issue, but be careful some cats don't get on with feliway. It sounds like your cat is stressed tbh as some of it sounds like spraying rather than weeing.

What's actually changed in your home in the last year, other than the cat's behaviour?

ButThisIsMyHappyFace · 21/03/2025 12:07

Hoppinggreen · 21/03/2025 11:53

Exactly

That’s really unfair and unhelpful. Obviously she loves the cat - if she didn’t, she wouldn’t be a) taking it to the vet b) considering rehoming it responsibly c) asking for help on here. If the situation was actually as you describe, she’d have abandoned the cat somewhere and never spoken about it again.

I haveen't described any situation
I asked who does she think would take an 11 year old cat that pisses everywhere on?
