To think that adapting to what the market needs leads to job satisfaction?

People often say you should “follow your passion” when choosing a career but isn’t it more practical to adapt to what’s in demand? If you develop skills that are valued, you’ll always have opportunities, better job security, and higher earning potential. And doesn’t job satisfaction often come from feeling competent, valued, and well-compensated rather than just passion alone?

AIBU to think that if more people focused on aligning their skills with the market demand, they’d end up happier in their careers? Or is this too transactional a way to look at work?

It’s not transactional at all, to me it’s the sensible thing to do.

Over the 35 years I’ve been working, I’ve had to constantly align my skills with what the market demands. For the industry I’m in, it’s the only way to stay employable.

I’m not sure about job satisfaction but less frustration perhaps. I do a job based on my skills and what’s required in the market in my sector. I know someone who is trying to make their passion (fitness - also my passion) into a career and is really struggling. She’s incredibly talented but it’s just a completely saturated market right now.
