I can smell smoke, WWYD

I was sitting on the bedroom floor on my phone (phone plugged in). I had also cracked the window open for a bit of fresh air. I could smell smoke and presumed it was coming from outside so got up to shut the window. When I could still smell it I realised it wasn’t outside and seemed to smell the strongest near where I was sitting. I have unplugged everything from the socket - it was just a lamp and a phone charger - and can’t smell it anymore. Do I need to do anything more? I am worried as I have a 4 month old who is also sharing this room with us. Whatever it was, could it be a fire risk even if nothing is plugged into the socket now? Please be kind, I’m very tired (and now wondering if it’s even ok to go to sleep)

Is anyone else in the house with you? Can’t they smell it too?

Can you flip the upstairs sockets trip switch off for tonight? It'll give you peace of mind and check it out better tomorrow

Have you got a fire alarms in your property? If not, go out and buy some tomorrow, they are your best bet for detecting smoke. Not helpful tonight I know.

Yes we have, but not in our room, outside our room on the landing. I’m worried because it’s the plug socket in our room. I have anxiety anyway and I didn’t actually SEE any smoke just thought I could smell it, but the plug socket is near the window which was open so maybe it was from outside. I dunno. I am running off about 4 hours of sleep which won’t be helping but I’m just worried to go to bed in case there’s a fire.

If you can't smell it anymore then I wouldn't worry. Double check the plug sockets, any extension leads and the phone charger cable for signs of damage or overheating. Double check the rest of the house too.
Have you got smoke detectors installed?
If charger seems all ok, monitor for the next few uses. If it comes back then you know to stop using and get new charger. Don't leave phone on charge overnight or unattended.

If it's a problem with a loose connector inside the socket then flipping the circuit breaker off for the upstairs sockets will remove the power to them. This will prevent any chance of overheating inside the socket if it's the wiring. You can to then get a sparky out tomorrow to check the socket.

I think I need to go to bed. I’ve opened the back door and the smoke smell is 100% coming from outside. 😂 this post is just my anxiety talking, I think.

Thank you everyone. One last thing. In the midst of my worries I put my ear close to the socket and could hear a really faint buzzing? I’ve googled and apparently to hear any kind of buzz is not common and can be the sign of a fault. Is this always the case?

Aye. When smoke gets in from outside the smell hangs around and in your nostrils forever.

Again that could be loose wiring or faulty connection and again the short term resolve to that would be switching off the power to the sockets...
