5 year old gel nails - is just once ok?

ChronicallyOnLime · 20/03/2025 12:44

God I don’t want to sound like an awful mother because I know gels can weaken nails.. but will one time be ok?

We’re off to Disneyland next week as a surprise for DD and she is utterly obsessed with having her nails done, we always use regular polish for her but they never last more than a day or two. I do my own gels at home for special occasions and I’m wondering whether I could do it on DD just for our trip?

I can avoid filing her nails surface as it’s not necessarily being done for that much longevity as you would an adult. But I’m just wondering if it’s still a terrible idea?

This thread is batshit.

I used to do my son’s toes when he was a toddler as he saw me do mine and wanted to copy. It’s absolutely fine. No lasting damage.

The hysteria on this thread is embarrassing. Comparing this to a murdered child was an especially low point.

why do treat a 5 year old like a dress up doll or a teenager. Let her be a child

Treating her like a dress up doll? What a ridiculous thing to say. Lots of children love playing dress up. Would you say a little boy in a Spiderman costume is being treated as a dress up doll?

ICanTellYouMissMe · 20/03/2025 13:38

Nail polish = sexualisation. FFS.

Please go back and RTFT.. I said about 4 posts in fair enough I’ll stick to her regular polish. Im
not going to not paint her nails with her kids polish just because some MN think it’s absolutely appalling that a 5 year old might like having some glitter on her nails from time to time.

I’ve said; bad idea on the gels. It was just a question. I’m not defending doing it.. I’m not just defending my 5 year for liking what she likes 😂

You don't need to say this. All of the suggestion comes from you and you still need someone to tell you to stop being stupid over it. Even though you say you are ok with it.

Enjoy your 5 year old being 5 and have a good long think about age appropriateness because age appropriateness is going to be a thing that you (not her) have to tackle for a long time yet.

Enjoy a 5 year old as a 5 year old. It's fleeting and so precious.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 20/03/2025 13:38

Led lamps do use UV, they just last longer than CF bulbs did. There’s only a narrow spectrum of UV that works with the gel to cure the polish. So it has to use UV it’s not just coloured light.

Overall the risk of cancer is small though as the exposure is low.

Fourfurrymonsters · 20/03/2025 13:39

I had gel nails once and they utterly ruined my nails for a good year.
I cannot fathom getting this done to a 5-year old.

WanderInMyTime · 20/03/2025 13:40

Just wanted to thank the OP for posting a thoroughly enjoyable thread.

CandyCane457 · 20/03/2025 13:40

I wouldn’t, probably because if she’s already so obsessed with the idea, and you let her get it done “just this once” I can’t imagine she will drop it, and she’s constantly going to be asking for future occasions.
Any five year old girls I know, don’t even know what gel nails are. Polish is fine at that age, and if they chip, just take the bottle and top her up each night.

TY78910 · 20/03/2025 13:40

’Enjoy a 5 year old as a 5 year old. It's fleeting and so precious.’

She is enjoying her 5 year old who likes nail polish.

ikujslf · 20/03/2025 13:40

Yikes. Whilst I obviously voted YABU and against using gels, the responses are pretty intense. Think OP gets the message…this site is mental sometimes.

Have a great holiday!

She probably won’t mind getting drawn into the discussion given she paints her 6 year old son’s nails, though I’m not sure how enlightening her contribution would be. Its always the same type of parents who love to show off that little Jimmy just loves wearing their tutu to Waitrose - sooo cool and right on.

Op I wouldn’t do it. I think the products people have linked that are aimed at children would be better to be on the safe side.

Some of the replies on here are so OTT though - I’m not a “girly” type, but if my daughter liked these things I wouldn’t be worried about her future prospects of becoming a pilot being thwarted lol calm down.

Actually I do pop up on the gender board from time to time. I have some real and genuine concerns about some of the trans movement and its aims. One of those is the idea that something like liking having colourful nails might mean that my little boy is 'really' a little girl, rather than a boy with bright nails.

I want to see a world where we appreciate that sex is real and that, therefore, we need single-sex spaces in some contexts, but where we also think that your sex has naff all to do with whether or not you fancy painting your nails, or being a pilot, or on whether it's better to urge you to be kind or to be brave. I think the posters who are telling OP that her daughter's nails have any bearing on anything else about her are exactly part of this problem.

ChronicallyOnLime · 20/03/2025 13:41

Excuse me while I just go pack her suitcase, I still have 3 pairs of fishnets and some bleach to pack.

This was the wrong place to post this OP 😂

Of course it’s fine for a one off. Jesus Christ she’s not going to her permanent damage from getting her nails done once.

Im assuming you’ve never fed her egg, or wheat or dairy or nuts at the risk of having an allergic reaction? Honestly some people 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

It's interesting how you're attacking other posters for having different opinions from you.
I suspect that you know how utterly ridiculous and inappropriate you are being.

Chuchoter · 20/03/2025 13:42

Yes, do get your five year old gel nails and whilst you're at it change her name to Chardonnay. 😕

I agree, it’s got to be a wind them up and watch them go’ thread.

No no, I’m not attacking anyone but the poster who suggested I’m sexualising my child.. and maybe the one who claimed I treat my child like a doll. But isn’t that me just defending myself and my child? I’m in total agreement with the people who are against the gels.. hence why I asked, I’ve been giving information.. and now I’m in agreement. It’s those that are attacking me that I’m not going to sit back and let slander over some bloody nail polish.

Wow, why so bitchy? People make different choices 🤷‍♀️

EvilNextDoor · 20/03/2025 13:44

I’ve really dug my heels in about a teen getting gels/acrylics…worst mum ever apparently 🙄🤣

I’d not allow a 5 year old to have gels but do know some parents who have - and yes I do judge them 🤷‍♀️

Gels destroyed my nails so I don’t want to imagine the damage they could cause to someone so young

No thanks, her name, Mercedes suits her well enough already.

A reputable salon won’t do it! Their insurance wouldn’t cover them for a child this young.

They would, there are salons in my area that do pamper parties for age 5+. It includes gel nails. These salons have been going for a while, the salon I go to, I've been going for years, they are fully qualified beauticians, qualifications on the wall etc, they offer it.

Theywerebrilliant · 20/03/2025 13:45

It was all ponies, tadpoles and mud pies when I was 5. Wouldn't swap my childhood for anything I must say...

I agree with whomever said you were sexualising your child. Make-up and nail varnish on a child is grim. Like bikinis and heels.
