Desperate for second baby

Hi all,

Looking for a bit of wisdom or advice. DH and I planned to try for a second baby this year - came off the pill late last year. I'm in my 30s and don't want too big an age gap between kids (max 5 years). Typically, I've just found out my job isn't stable as my company are restructuring later this year, although I have no idea who or what will be effected. DH has a good enough job but works in a bit of a precarious sector.

I felt so ready to try for our much wanted second baby and feel that we should wait now but feel that the timing will never be right either so we just go for it. Should I wait a while longer or just get on with it? Has anyone been in a similar situation?

I'd crack on with ttc. Assuming other aspects are ok - decent home, no major debts, savings, decent incomes (for the moment) and, crucially, a support network.

You may or may not be made redundant, in which case you'll presumably get a pay out anyway.

There’s no right answer, but personally I’d just carry on TTC.

There’s rarely a perfect time to try for a baby and whilst your situation sounds like it could be better, it also could be a lot worse. Your DH is still employed and you may not even be affected by the changes. In my sector they’re almost constantly restructuring so if I’d let that put me off I would never have had children 😁

Thank you for your reply. We have a decent situation as it stands, we don't have a lot of savings but can build this up a bit - my main worry is not having a job to go back to after mat leave!

Thank you for your reply. You're right, I think I will scrutinise any situation - when I got pregnant with my first baby id only just started a new job which wasn't ideal! I've never been through a restructure or redundancy so it's all very scary and new

I was literally made redundant 1 week after giving birth to my second child, couldn’t have predicted that. I say crack on - you just never know what the future holds. All worked out for us for the best!

I would go for it. A pregnancy may give you an added layer of protection in your job security rather than causing issue. But either way there’s no way of knowing what will happen and you could be waiting a long time.

I agree with PP’s there will never be a perfect time, if you want another baby go for it.

A restructure isn’t a guaranteed job loss. I’d crack in now while you have paid maternity leave.

Oh my goodness! I guess you still get maternity pay etc?

This is very true, I can then look for a new job on mat leave if I needed to...the job market feels awful at the moment though.

@Bangpennylane no unfortunately not, company went into administration so I got nothing - no notice pay etc. But we managed, life throws us these things but usually all works out in the end. Go for it OP, you just can’t predict the future but I’m sure all will work out.

That's really tough. We can't manage on one salary, which is why I'm so reluctant but also feel like life is too short and you just find a way!
