RWI phonics reception progress - can you go from green to pink ?

I was talking to my DDs teacher and she was saying something about it being decided if my DD was going to move to purple or pink story books now.

I noticed that her books are the purple ones since after half term pretty much. Before this, she was on the green ones.

can some kids jump straight from green to pink ? Or is everyone first on purple ? I mean of course there are some kids who can already read chapter books etc, but I mean the majority of kids- not the ones that are absolutely exceptional readers already. ( in DDs class there’s a girl who’s been reading exceptionally since she was 3)..

thanks in advance !

Teacher of RWI here.

Yes it is possible. It all depends on how well your child knows her sounds and if she's speedy reading.

We are just assessing, I have taught Green group and have 3 children moving to pink group.

Which sounds do they need to know to move to pink ? I guess different ones to purple and green ?

You can skip sets/colours. My daughter went from purple to blue . The next half term she went to grey. He school accesses them every half term. She's been on grey for a while and has been reading the same bloody book repeatedly. They don't want to change her group buy that's more about them than her.

The teacher said to me that my DD is on the cusp of being in the ‘ exceeding’ category for her reading but that it was key to keep her confidence up. So I guess they decided to keep her in the purple group. She really doesn’t want to read with me at home, sadly. I’m finding it very difficult to get her to sit down with me and read, which makes me sad.

My daughter learnt a lot from reading eggs ( it's about £10pcm) and teach your monsters how to read (free on a laptop). They are phonics / reading games.
