Attitude towards work

AIBU to think most people don’t really care about work (deep down).

Recently working with some colleagues who seem very passionate about work and I finish each day thinking - do you really care that much?

Work allows me to enjoy my free time - that’s all it is.

I have worked with colleagues like yours (they literally have no life outside of work, but sadly believe everyone should share their mindset too !)

I work to live NOT the other way round .

I guess it depends on the job a bit too - are you / colleagues saving lives ?

MajorCarolDanvers · 19/03/2025 16:24

It depends on what you do. I work for a charity. I’m pretty passionate about it and do care. Same with most people in my sector.

I can also think of some other careers where I believe people will care and be passionate about their jobs.

Everyone has to be passionate about work these days. Something has gone badly wrong for people who are passionate about admin FFS. You don't even get a carriage clock and a decent pension out of it.

Dh absolutely loves his job, it makes a real life difference to people but he also loves being home, has prioritised his family to make it home for family dinner when the children were younger and ate much earlier. The company encourage this, they are very family friendly. You can love your job but not make it your life.

We raised our children to know there are jobs you can love and jobs you can just do, some pay really well and some not so well, you just hope for the combination of love it and pays well.

I care a lot about doing a good job (emergency medicine). But even then, I come first, I've dropped my hours because it was taking up too much headspace so only do 2 days a week now. I work to live not live to work. If we are all honest, even in a job you really care about, if they stopped paying us we would stop turning up. There is much more to life than your job (family, friends, hobbies, pets, travel, things that bring you joy).

Yes agree depends what you do .I work in education with kids for whatever reason have been excluded from school and to see these kids turn it around and go on to be successful in whatever they choose to do makes me happy.
But I'm not consumed by work I do switch off and I definitely do have a life outside of work

DoYouReally · 19/03/2025 17:45

I love (well like more accurately) my job but I only work contracted hours except every occasionally and don't give it much thought outside of those hours.

I couldn't do something 40 hours a week if I didn't enjoy it. I will leave if this one changes too.

I work with some people who don't but they are doing it for a specific reason. That's fine too but the people who constantly moan about their job and do nothing to change it drive me crazy. Look for a new one or accept something is keeping you there but stop moaning and annoying everyone else.

OtterlyMad · 19/03/2025 18:28

I enjoy my job. It interests and challenges me, utilises my strengths, and pays me reasonably well. The company is flexible and supportive, and I get on really well with my colleagues. I guess some people would describe me as “passionate” since I put in a lot of effort and have a positive/enthusiastic attitude. But I’m also happy when it comes time to sign off, and I certainly don’t think/worry about work during my evenings and weekends.

TrixieFatell · 19/03/2025 18:32

I feel I'm in a very fortunate place. My job brings me a lot of satisfaction and I'd be sad not to do my job. I also have an amazing family life, great friends and take every opportunity to experience the world. I do work to live, but I also enjoy the time I spend at work so win win.

whatnoooow · 19/03/2025 18:35

I don’t even like work on a surface level, never mind deep down

Snackpocket · 19/03/2025 18:39

Both things can be true at the same time. It is possible to be passionate about your job and have a full life outside of it. I’m the sort of person who works hard and cares about doing a good job but as once I log off I switch off and have a great non work life.

Maskednice · 19/03/2025 19:05

That’s the key bit for me, if they stopped paying you - everyone would stop work.

To me, work is a means of funding other parts of your life.

I work in an office / corporate role but find the passion superficial / fake - we do make a difference in our roles but it’s not going to put man on the moon or anything.
