AIBU worrying? Little girl unwell

She’s 5, she said she had a belly ache on Saturday and she poo’d herself a little bit - carried on as normal, mentioned her belly again Saturday night & Sunday, didn’t mention it today - but has woken up Monday night into Tuesday being sick?

I said ‘what was you doing before being sick’ and she said ‘holding my head’ - I said why did it hurt and she said ‘a little’

Shes ok in herself? - she’s never complained of anything other than a belly ache once or twice a day - but acting completely normal otherwise.

I’ve had a poorly premature baby this year so my anxiety is naturally heightened- I’m under my GP for this and it’s helping.

i just think as brain tumours are my biggest fear and I’ve read waking up one a headache, sickness or nausea is a red flag 🚩

Does she have a temperature? I would assume she's come down with a bug

No temperature. Which is why I’m more concerned 😭

Is she constipated?

Lunde · 18/03/2025 00:53

Headache, sickness and stomach ache are all well known symptoms of the really common gastric viruses - norovirus and calicivirus (also known as winter vomiting virus),

Check for fever, keep her hydrated and maintain really good handwashing as it spreads quickly

Kirbert2 · 18/03/2025 00:53

It is probably just a tummy bug but I'd definitely keep an eye on her. if it stops say tomorrow and then starts again the next day, I'd take her in to be checked just in case it's anything else.

Has she been pooing ok since the one on Saturday?

Is she constipated?

She’s not said she’s struggling to go to the toilet, she has the opposite problem on Saturday, where she pooped herself a little and she was saying her belly was hurting then too- but I’m aware this can also happen with constipation - my partner went into her 10 minutes before she threw up as she was crying saying she felt sick- no mention of the headache to him & I asked about it and she said told me. She never told me it hurt her first.

Ahh I’m so worried 🙁 she’s very good at carrying on as normal so it’s hard to tell with her, she’s been sick a few times in a row tonight and hasn’t mentioned her head herself. My partner her dad is adamant it’s a sickness bug and that’s it.

but she has no fever, she ate dinner fine? - she’s been complaining of belly ache for the last few days… I don’t recall her going to the toilet on Sunday but she done 2 normal ish stools today.

you’ve taken quite a leap there to think it’s serious bless you 🙏 keep her hydrated, that’s probably what her headache is linked to as she will have lost fluids being sick.
at 5 years old they seem to have bugs constantly and surely if there was something as serious as a tumour going on there would be a bigger headache
hope you can find a way to switch off a little, maybe journal your thoughts to put them in some order?
wishing you some peace xx

My kids have had bugs like this. I remember once they kept going almost 48 hours and then being sick again a few times and feeling rubbish but were ok in between and no temperature

MummaHud · 18/03/2025 02:30

thank you. She’s been sick every 5-10 mins, mainly bile and her belly is making sounds. I’m sure it’s just her stomach, I made this post when she was sleeping - but it’s clear it’s likely a bug so I’ll focus on the job in hand and try and shut my anxiety out! X

It just sounds like a bug. She had a bit of belly ache before doing a poo and vomited a few times. Not all bugs have a temperature. As long as she’s drinking and weeing it’s not something I would be concerned over. If she doesn’t want to drink try ice lollies.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 18/03/2025 03:18

Sounds like a typical tummy bug. Keep a temperature diary for 24-48hrs, give child ibuprofen for headache, keep her hydrated (tiny pinch of salt in the water) and note any other symptoms. She'll likely improve quickly. However, it never hurts to call your nurse line (or equivalent) as we're not doctors here. ❤️

Lemons1571 · 18/03/2025 04:45

I would get her double checked at the gp for appendicitis.

Elisabeth3468 · 18/03/2025 05:12

Deffo sounds like a bug. They are awful. Just keep the hydrated and keep an eye. If it lasts days then get her checked out x

Agix · 18/03/2025 06:28

This sounds very much like a tummy bug I had recently OP, with the stomach gurgly sounds! I also didn't have any temp. I had it bad for 4 whole days and then I got better, but it took a further 2-3 weeks to not feel "off".

Pharmacist said it was noro (I spoke to them as I could not even keep water in me) however didn't seem like it... We think could have also been food poisoning.

Anyway my point is, could definitely "just" be a bug and they can last longer than the usual 24 hours. Hopefully your little one will be OK soon!

whoatherenellie · 18/03/2025 07:01

Sounds like a stomach bug but i know that having a prem baby messes with your head op so please be kind to yourself!

It's a good sign that she's passing stools normally and no temperature - give her a few quiet days and wait for her to get better. Plenty of fluids and cuddles on the sofa.

Endofyear · 18/03/2025 08:21

It doesn't sound like anything serious OP, try not to worry. As your partner says, it's very likely a stomach bug. Try and keep her hydrated and let her rest. Hopefully in 24/48 hours she'll be feeling better.

AgainstTheOddsNo2 · 18/03/2025 09:05

My son has just had this bug. Though the other way around. Was sick a couple of days, bounced back and then had diarrhea for a couple of days. Both times he had no temp and absolutely fine I himself.

Unbelievable amount of weird bugs around ripping through the schools.

I am the worst for anxiety about the kids. And everything seems worse in the middle of the night.

It sounds like a bug to me. But maybe get a stepped plan in your head to fight the anxiety. Know the signs of a medical emergency and have a plan for that. Then, if it's not that allow yourself a time frame to worry...eg. if no improvement in 24 hrs I will...

PrincessW11 · 18/03/2025 10:00

Lots of norovirus around-still lots of messages from kids’ schools about it. Sounds like what it is with cramps etc
It can take 4-6 days for full recovery-white bread/white pasta/crackers/probiotic yoghurts +++

My youngest is the same, I understand.

Just keep an eye on her and if you are still worried in a few days or anything changes then there's no harm getting her to the doctors.

Tofeeornottofee · 18/03/2025 20:49

Is the bile green? If so, this happened to my son (also 5) just before Christmas, three consecutive nights of waking crying with stomach pain but fine in the day, and on the third night green bile. Ended up in hospital and eventually the doctors said it was a piece of impacted stool, so a form of constipation even though he'd still been 'going' most days. We had to follow a disimpaction routine using movicol (lots of info on this on the Eric website) but that worked for him. He's still on 2 sachets a day now.

Sassybooklover · 18/03/2025 21:30

My son had a stomach bug at the end of last month. Sick quite a few times, diarrhoea but no temperature and he had a headache (most likely due to the loss of fluid). There are a lot of stomach bugs going around, and if there's one in school, it spreads like a wildfire. Encourage your daughter to wash her hands, make it part of her routine. I certainly don't think there's anything seriously wrong with her.
