Hi, need to rant/share my experience of what happened today. I went to the doctors surgery today because I needed a referral to endocrinologist which was clearly stated by the gynaecologist service & the nurse at the surgery. I got called in by a doctor I’d never seen before I didn’t know if he was a locum? He seemed in a rush & unapproachable. I explained that I was told only the Gp could make a referral to endocrinologist which was why I was here & he tutted before refusing to do the referral- his words were “endocrinology will not help or do anything for you”, point blank refused. I stated strongly I was in lots of throbbing pain in my pelvis from my PCOS flare ups & he literally rolled his eyes before saying “have you tried painkillers?”. I told him I try codeine, nurofen etc and have obviously been down that route to cope while waiting for my referral. He said “you’re young (early 20s) & surely you want a family! The biggest way through your problems is to lose weight it will solve 60% of the PCOS”
he didn’t look much at my records so clearly did it off appearance as I wasn’t weighed so I must look fat as hell. Yes I am overweight but just about get away with it, I’m top heavy only with quite a full face but not quite full double chin. He refused to do my referral & then sent me on my way. I’m in agony with pelvic pain & feel so sick from the amount of pain it’s causing.
has anyone had similar experience? Advice?
for context yes I know PCOS is hugely impacted with weight but he didn’t want to know in terms of pain or referrals as the referral was also due to my very abnormal hormone test results. Thank you if you read xx

The NHS is great until it isn’t. My DD at 13 had migraines lasting for weeks, some unexplained pains in her body, mainly shoulders. Three times to GP, twice to A&E. Ibuprofen, paracetamol was suggested (!!), which did nothing. Round and round, though she was eventually referred to the paediatrician at hospital. Long story short she was finally diagnosed by a different hospital with MS at 17.
I don’t know what you can do other than a different GP? Can the gynaecologist write requesting the referral? Frankly if no joy I’d go private. I did for the first MRI for my DD as the NHS one was booked six months away (it actually didn’t show anything, but the ones she had at 17 did show old scarring), though ironically I needed a GP referral for a private consultation too.

Have you got access to your NHS notes? If not, get it. Then shove it in their face. Request another appointment and be relentless. Yes you are young but if you've been told you need your Dr to sign it off, then persist. It's crazy that we need Dr's permission but I've had to go down this route many times for various things. You have my sympathy.

I wonder if you have endometriosis- have gynae excluded this and why couldn’t gynae refer you to endocrinology?
