Why are all clothes made for hourglass or pear and none for apples?

Sad apple here feeing despondent after another failed shopping trip….

I’m a normal weight, average height but just look disgusting in everything in changing rooms and have no idea how to dress to not look hugely overweight or accentuate my stomach area.

There seems to be minimal options for those with no waist, but there are loads of us, why is this?

Same here OP. I wear elasticated waist trousers/joggers/leggings and loose tunics or sweatshirts on the top. I’ve always been size 10 top and 12 bottom but trousers and skirts are huge on the hips if they are big enough for my ginormous stomach! My c-section pouch just adds to the lumpy tum. I have to go to a smart wedding in the summer and finding a suitable dress that fits is proving a nightmare!

Survivingnotthriving24 · 17/03/2025 20:14

The general consensus is that clothes are no longer cut for actual human bodies and just cut for the hanger? I hate shopping.

Clairey1986 · 17/03/2025 20:15

Ha I am a (large) hourglass and can hardly find tops that fit the boobs. Not sure who the clothes are fitting 🤔

Teenybub · 17/03/2025 20:30

I’m an hourglass and I would argue I can’t get clothes to fit me, everything just hangs off my bust and makes me look a lot bigger than I am, or if I buy fitted it looks good on the waist but I’m spilling out of the top.

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 17/03/2025 20:39

Totally agree. I rely on elastic waistbands and fitted legs. It’s depressing looking rubbish in everything.

Bias cut is best on apples 😍

Also, off the shoulder or other necklines that draw the eye up, or shorter styles that draw the eye down. Message me if you'd like me to help - I worked for Jigsaw and John Lewis as a personal stylist for years 😊

It's not really, they aren't cut the right length to look right on an hour glass. Boxy tops look OK if they stop at your waist and can be worn with trousers and a skirt which show off the waist. What I find when I put them on is they sit on my hips.

Yes so that’s style. You don’t like the style. It fits you though.

MyGardenHasGreatTits · 17/03/2025 21:23

Fellow 🍎 here. Tall and slim with long legs, but short back and tiny gap from hip to waist

The day they stop making high waisted jeans cannot come soon enough.

Them’s bad 🍎🍎’s!

minipie · 17/03/2025 21:28

For years until recently, everything was made for apples. Skinny jeans, leggings. Loose boxy tops. Shirts, blazers. Waistless mini dresses designed to show off good legs or boobs and hide the tummy. Waistless maxi dresses. They were everywhere.

It’s only in the past few years that waists have made a reappearance. As an hourglass I am busy stocking up. It won’t be long before the fashion pendulum swings back to clothes for apple shapes.

GnomeDePlume · 17/03/2025 21:35

DD is an apple shape, I have made The Hughes dress (Friday Pattern Company) for her a couple of times. I highly recommend it. The bodice laces at the back meaning she can get just the right fit. The skirt flares from the hip which gives a really nice silhouette.

It isn't a particularly difficult make, advanced beginner/intermediate.

Well I'm an hourglass leaning towards pear shape and haven't yet found a pair of jeans that fits both my hips and waist. They're either too tight on the hips or too gappy on the waist. I'm often heard grumbling that women's jeans are made for men or apple shapes.

I found some!!!!!!

Oh and on top of being a fat apple I am tall. And manufacturers seem to think tall women have long legs…but regular length arms!

I am a short and fat apple!! Cropped trousers come down to my ankles lol!

Biggerbucket · 17/03/2025 22:08

Having read all of the above, no wonder so many people recommended COS. Shapeless sack dresses to non-Viking ankles fit all of the fruit basket.

Hey thanks for this, I'll check those out!

It's funny reading this thread, NONE of us seem to be able to find clothes that fit us! What's happened?

chillibuns · 17/03/2025 22:53

Joining in with the frustration. Skinny arms and legs. Straight up and down middle. Any trousers that fit my tummy are overly loose on my legs and look ridiculous. Anything that fits my legs and bum either won't tie or I end up with a muffin top. I've grown to dislike shopping very much.
I'm starting to learn to make adjustments to clothes in the hope I can have some comfort and style.

Ooh, I'd love some tips!

Easipeelerie · 17/03/2025 22:59

My hips are much wider than my waist and I feel everything is made for apples or for people with very regular shape. Apples and straight figures look good in those puffy shouldered blouses which have been everywhere for years. They make me look like I’ve got epaulettes.

The only jeans I ever found to fit me were Levi’s Ultra Curve. They were perfect then they stopped making them ffs

Im an hourglass with bigger boobs and bum and a smaller waist and trousers are an absolute nightmare to the point I’ve not worn them for probably 30 years.

I don’t find clothes that fit me easy to come by. The high street isn’t made for curves - I’ve found a couple of brands and stick to those. Never fully dressed works for my shape but they’re not the cheapest

There’s not a single thing in Cos that fits me. I’m short with hips and narrow shoulders.

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 17/03/2025 23:01

I’m hourglass and I find everything is cut with a ‘boxy’ / ‘boyfriend’ / ‘loose’ fit and makes me look like a sack of spuds as there’s no shape to any of it. Maybe we should swap lists of the shops we visit!

booklover21 · 17/03/2025 23:42

Front pleated tapered trousers works wonders. Skims the stomach but doesn’t add volume on the legs. Bonus points for me if it’s slightly cropped / ankle length for flats or heels. Slimmer fitting tops or jumpers tucked in helps define a waist, along with a belt. Honestly, give it a try. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

It's funny reading this thread, NONE of us seem to be able to find clothes that fit us! What's happened?

My friend is a dressmaker. He told.me that all clothes in shops are made for a C cup bust fitting as standard. That's why clothes get wider at the top as you go up the sizes but not deeper (to accommodate bigger boobs).

So unless you're a C cup, everything will be either too loose or too tight across the chest.

That's one problem.

Sizings are so standardised (for cost effectiveness) that even styles that are.deemed.to suit one shape more than another aren't actually cut for that shape which means that whether a style would suit apple, pear, rectangle, hourglass shapes aesthetically they still don't fit because they're all cut for the same measurements.

Thank you for that explanation, makes a lot of sense. I often find on a size 16 dress, it's too big on the hips but yes, it has no depth at the top to accommodate my bust. No wonder we're all finding it so difficult!
