What do you think of fake log burners?

I'd love a real fire or at least a log burner. We have proper fireplaces but it will cost too much to get them working again. Do the electric fires that are designed to look like log burners look a bit rubbish? I'm not exactly the most stylish of people. I can't decide if I like them which probably means I don't.

Your house, your choice.

We have one (left by the old owners, as they’re not really my thing as we also have a real one we installed in another room). It kicks out a lot of heat and looks decent - and I’m very fussy with how things look. Also bonus environmental points.

NominatedNameOfTheDay · 16/03/2025 10:45

I think they’re a great alternative, and less polluting than actual log burners!

And how often are you really likely to have it on? When they’re off they’re not going to look much different to the real thing anyway. You could get a fake flue added to look a bit more real if that’s what you’re going for.

I prefer the first one of the two you’ve posted.

summerlovingvibes · 16/03/2025 10:46

Have you looked at bio-ethanol fuel ones? Real flames but no flue install required. We're just looking to buy one at the moment.

MasterBeth · 16/03/2025 10:46

Pretty much any fake interiors trend is naff. Fake oak laminate flooring, fake beams, fake Georgian leading on double-glazed windows, fake real fires.

XWKD · 16/03/2025 10:48

It's a matter of taste. I think they look silly.

Witchymadwoman · 16/03/2025 10:50

Have you considered a gas fire which looks similar to a stove? They can produce as much heat as the real thing but less messy. We one of these in our living room and a wood burning stove in the dining room.

Thirteenblackcat · 16/03/2025 10:50

It’s up to you isn’t it?

Targeted heat would be good! I assumed they wouldn't be that warm.

Well yes obviously. 😂

What do you mean? I'm thinking fake aga which I'm assuming I not what you mean!

I've got an ACR Neo 3 in one room, the one with the log cupboard thing underneath it. It heats up the room really quickly (we just use it in spring and autumn). People assume its the real thing.

I installed it as I'd have to have gone outside with a flue for various reasons and I didn't want that, cost about £1k from memory.

Ours is very warm. They definitely aren’t just decorative.

That’d would much more expensive than electric or even the real thing over time.

ItisIbeserk · 16/03/2025 11:02

I’ve got a cheap one in my study (about £100 from Argos). I quite like it. It’s warm, and from a distance it looks in keeping. It’s fine. We do have a gas ‘log burner’ in the living room that is far better quality and we use a lot. But obviously there are issues around fossil fuels with gas too. We inherited that with the house. If I were buying new I’d be looking at bio-ethanol.

We also have an actual log burner which we use about three times a year as I am twitchy about particulates and have the gas option. Can’t deny it’s the warmest of the three.

It wouldn't fit in the fireplace.

I like them. We've got a woodburner and I do love it, but what with cleaning it out and lugging the wood in from the wood pile - and splitting and stacking the wood in the pile in the first place - it's a bit of a faff. I'd happily get a fake one in future.

PrettayGood · 16/03/2025 11:05

They look really naff.

A bio-ethanol one would be much better as it has real flames. A couple of friends of ours have them and they look really nice.

No! It's a collective decision.
After the various postings there should be.a vote and WE will decide if @Oollliivviiaa can have a fake log burner or not.

Oollliivviiaa · 16/03/2025 11:12

How do you refill bio ethanol? Do you buy a bottle of it like you would a gas tank? I've googled and can't find the answer.

🤣 Then I can blame the Internet if we get one and don't like it.

My electric one does have a really classy plastic flue pipe that you balance on top. I have caused some concern on work calls before when a cat has dislodged it by jumping on the stove.

I'm not doubting it looks lovely but the way you've described it made me laugh.

Don’t worry! That was the idea. I wouldn’t say mine looks lovely, but it was a very cheap one in a room I only use to work in. It looks realistic enough to freak my colleagues out though.

Cattreesea · 16/03/2025 11:17

I have one in my living room.

When I bought the house there was an old gas one that had to be immediately condemned and removed because it had been installed incorrectly...

So I put an electric one instead. It is quite warm and I find looking at the flames effect soothing.

I never worry about what other people might think of my house decor!
