I've changed the pullymaid rope by myself without watching a YouTube video or such.

Old rope had worn out in one spot where it was literally being held together by 3 strings. Every time walking under ut felt like Russian roulette.

I'm quite handy but this for some reason, made feel a sense of:

"You're not a complete failure after all".

What small wins have you had at home where the mental reward has made a huge difference?

Next for me is wallpapering🤞.

YANBU: small victory, big reward.
YABU: Get the handyman in.

Yanbu! And you're definitely not a failure!

I've been trying to get rid of a lot of old furniture in my house and deep cleaning- I've made a decent dent in the job x

I changed the headlight bulb in my car by myself! Made me feel proud!

Onthemove4 · 16/03/2025 11:12

I had a problem with my car engine many years ago. I don’t know the first thing about car mechanics. The car was losing power and engine cutting out in my way to work. A lorry driver pulled over next to me in the lay-by and quickly identified a small stretch of hose which was punctured.

The car limped the last few hundred yards to the nursing home where I worked. The home manager was big on keeping odd items that “might come in handy”. During my tea break I went to her junk box and cut a short piece of orange rubber tubing from an antique enema set. I replaced the leaky tube in the car engine in the hope it might get me home when I finished my shift at 10pm. I intended booking it in to the garage the next day but as it was back to full power I held off. When I traded in the car 3 years later the trusty length of enema tubing was still in place 😀

I accidentally hit the wrong button, sorry, I honestly don’t think you’re being unreasonable, I think you are a superstar who deserves celebrating! I built a big cupboard in our hallway by chopping some secondhand ikea wardrobes to make them fit. I’m so proud! 😃

NewYearNewDietAgain · 16/03/2025 12:23

Wallpapering! I watched a couple of YouTube videos first. It was a big wall and took me hours….but I did it all by myself!

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 16/03/2025 12:58

Lovely stories and inspiration for when I ever need to do the stuff you've done 🙂.

The washing machine came up with an error message a couple of months ago. I looked up what to do and fixed it. Small wins are the best.

LauderSyme · 16/03/2025 13:26

Oh well done OP. That critical internal voice many of us have needs gagging!

I was pretty pleased with myself when I disconnected my washing machine from my old place and moved it to my new place and connected it there. It isn't all that hard, I know, but I needed to screw up my confidence to give it a go.

Last year I dismantled and disposed of a raised wooden flowerbed that was rotting away, that felt good too.

Louielooiloveyou · 16/03/2025 13:35

Yesterday I undid all the plumpin g for my bathroom sink and cleared all the gunge 🤢

TheeNotoriousPIG · 16/03/2025 13:37

Phew! I thought that someone else had had the cheek to say that to you. Then I realised that it was the Internal Voice of Doom!

I disconnected my washing machine in preparation for my new one to arrive. It arrived, and I had paid for it to be connected, put it on, and it flooded the utility room. Needless to say, I sorted that out, too...

My next job is building raised beds.

I have had handy-people and delivery people surprised by my strength. I may be young, female and small, but I am mighty! 😊

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 16/03/2025 14:21

Oh yes, the washing machine!
Last time I watched the two men who do it for a job struggle to fit it in and almost Ieave without fitting it in, I thought next time I'm doing it myself.

At the start of the pandemic our bread machine paddle stopped going round. I unscrewed the base and discovered that the drive belt was shredded and had come off. I measured it, found the right size replacement for sale for about 70p on Amazon, and fixed it. It has worked perfectly since.

Isn’t it satisfying…

and smells like perm lotion!

My mother became an artist late in life and bought herself a drill to make boxes and objects for her collages. I remember how proud she was! Every woman should have her iwn drill, she used to say.

I'm another one who did this! Equal parts disgusting but strangely satisfying. And the water draining briskly down the plughole - heaven!

I also managed to get a lump of mud that was stuck inbetween the cat's claws out without any assistance - gold star for me.

thetemptationofchocolate · 17/03/2025 13:29

I just replaced all the tiles in our kitchen and it actually looks all right. I'm very proud of that.

SeaToSki · 17/03/2025 13:33

I cut down a tree with a chain saw…a small saplingish tree, but I did it myself without crushing anything, cutting myself and I bucked it up and dragged the brush to the car and then the garden waste dump. I still remember it when Im having a wobble about doing something now

Poppins2016 · 17/03/2025 13:35

Wallpapering is extremely satisfying and very easy (just make sure to buy enough rolls/paste and stick to the same batch) enjoy yourself, OP!

I find that most jobs can be completed relatively easily once you've Googled/YouTubed/asked for advice in a hardware store, as long as you have a little common sense!

Yellowhammer09 · 17/03/2025 13:35

I rewired a plug last night without referring to a YouTube video. I had to take it apart so I could get the wire through a small hole in the cupboard.

Handy for that patio too!

Thanks for this, I'm tempted by two rolls on Ebay for half price. Thinking could use them behind the wardrobe, but would mean it can never be moved 🤔

I repaired the radiator in my bedroom a few months ago. Googled the problem, disappeared down a couple of rabbit holes before finding the right YouTube video and figured it all out. I am very proud of myself.

And just as a public service announcement, there is a chap on YouTube called Key Fob Rob who does explainers in how to change the battery in your car key by make and model. You’ll never be ripped off by a garage again!

TweezerMay · 17/03/2025 17:52

Excellent thread. Well done OP.

I was recently thrilled by changing my DH’s windscreen wiper blades. Similarly thrilled by doing a bit of plaster skimming that had been needed doing for years.

Next job: resealing the bath, tried it years ago and fucked it up so badly. Not looking forward to that. Wish me luck. That stuff gets everywhere.
